1. 研究目的与意义

First, I am interested in it. The first time I touch the story is seeing the movie Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump won six awards of The Oscar in 1995, to some extent, it is not only a story, but also a cultural phenomenon. The story reflected the chaotic American society in 1960s from the aspect of the man with physical disability and low IQ and it also includes a lot of historical events. The purpose of the story is to arouse a deep thinking of the past and the American Dream which was cherished by every American people. This cultural phenomenon has a lot of things to explore.Second, the study of American Dream is valuable. Forrest Gump is a remarkable achievement and written by Winston Groom, this novel not only conquer the literature enthusiasts but also inspire those people who are confused about their life, Gump himself is the best interpretation of the American dream, his diligence, honest, independence are all the parts of the American Dream. The American Dream is playing an important role in the development of American history. And it encouraged generation of American to pursue success, it not only bring American people the motivation of running towards the dream , but also bring the courage to grope or to change, and it makes American Dream became the faith of American people.Third, based on the current research situation, I can have a deep acknowledgement about the American Dream which reflected by Forrest Gump. The development of American Dream has a long history, includes three periods: origin, evolvement and change. And different people have different definitions to the American Dream, so does Gump.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This paper will discuss many aspects of American Dream according to many studies and statistics. Of course, I will also refer to the American culture at that time, the paper will not only just talk about the American Dream. The most important part I need to solve in my paper is the exploration of the American Dream in Forrest Gump.First, I will write about the social background of America and its impact on Forrest Gump. Second, we can have a better understanding of American culture in Forrest Gump, then we will focus on the study of the American Dream. We will talk about the definition, history, development and influence of American Dream. On the basis of the characters in the Forrest Gump, I can get a deeper and more special aspect of the American Dream. Atlast, I can arrive at a conclusion about the American Dream reflected by Forrest Gump. I will take advantage of the some basic ways in the thesis, such as close-reading and text analysis.

3. 国内外研究现状

So far, many domestic and foreign scholars have done numerous studies and research in this field. Comparing the perspective of the American dream in the 1920#8217;s to the American Dream in the 1940#8217;s and present day seems to be a repeating cycle. The American dream is always evolving and changing. The American dream for present day is similar to the dream of the 1920#8217;s. An Ideal of the American life is to conform to what our society has determined is success.Domestic scholars: Many scholars have studied the American Dream and Forrest Gump from many aspects, such as American culture and traditional value. For example, Huang Yan, Cheng Yingcong and Xie Fang studied the changing of the American Dream with Forrest Gump. Zhu Shuzhen studied the American culture reflected by Forrest Gump.Foreign scholars: Many foreign scholars focus on the development of the American Dream, the current understanding of American Dream. Such as Delbanco, Andrew wrote the paper The Real American Dream: A Meditation of Hope. And Henderson, Ben said American Dream Slipping Away, but Hope Intact.
