Jane Austen was one of the distinguishedrealistic novelists in the nineteenth- century-English literature.

Pride and Prejudice is a very importantnovel by Jane Austen and it is known widely all over the world. #8220;It is a truthuniversally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune mustbe in want of a wife.#8221; Jane Austen provides subsequent argument with the firstline of her novel which is Pride and Prejudice. Austen set the story in thefirst decade of the nineteenth century and tells us different ways andattitudes to the marriage between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet#8217;s five daughters. It canbe seen clearly in Pride and Prejudice that Austen fully expresses her originalviews on marriage:property,social status and love are three indispensable elements in a marriage.Itis wrong to marry for money,but itis unwise to marry without money. Austen#8217;s views on marriage emphasize love andeconomic condition, but love plays the significant role which is thepredominant aspect at Austen#8217;s time. People at that time took money much moreseriously, even on their marriage and marriage was the only way for women togain social status and recognition.

With the development of the time,people#8217;s views on marriage gradually change. Different people have differentviews on marriage. In the contemporary society the ideal of the marriage isdifferent from before. It is very necessary for the people to train a correctconcept of marriage. In Pride and Prejudice, four marriages show four types ofmarriage, it deeply analyzes people#8217;s view of marriage. To the contemporarypeople#8217;s marriage, it#8217;s enlightenment and warns.

Owing to the great influence of Pride and Prejudice, critics and scholars all over the world have given them plenty of comments which cover almost every aspect of their works.

In 1984, Ruth Goode wrote a book named Jane Austen#8217;s Pride and Prejudice concerning about analyzing Austen and her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. Later in1988, another book named Jane Austen: Women, Politics, and the Novel appeared, offering us new ideas of the book.

The first Chinese study on the marriagein Pride and Prejudice would be Zhu Aiping, and in her article #8220;Attitude towardMarriage in Jane Austen#8217;s Pride and Prejudice#8221;, she expressed her point that#8220;By the stories we can see, it mainly tells of the love story between a rich,proud young man Darcy and the beautiful and intelligent woman ElizabethBennet.#8221;

This thesis falls into four parts. Firstis the introduction of the background of Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice,then the author will describe different marriages in Pride and Prejudice andstudy Jane Austen#8217;s attitude of the marriage about the four pairs of couple andfinally compare it with the marriage in Austen#8217;s time. The thesis will end up witha conclusion.
