1. 研究目的与意义

Since the adoption of the policy of reforming and opening up to the outside world, more and more foreigners have come to visit China. Therefore, at such a critical moment of demonstrating and promoting Chinese culture, the ubiquitous mistranslations of tourism public signs are intolerable. What#8217;s more, Suzhou is an important city for China to communicate with the outside world. To study and try to solve the problem of mistranslation will not only provide Suzhou with better development, but also help China build a better image.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

My paper will give a brief introduction of public signs, analyze the mistranslation in Suzhou scenic spots and try to give some suggestions to solve the problem. The first part will introduce the definition and functions of public signs and talk about public signs in scenic spots in more details. Then, the paper will focus on the specific mistakes of public sign translations in Suzhou, such as spelling and grammar mistakes, Chinglish, improper use of words and word redundancy. Finally, the feasible translation strategies will be explored.

3. 国内外研究现状

These years, there have been many researches on the C-E translation of public signs, most by Chinese scholars. For example, Lv hefa has written several essays to discuss this problem in a long period. In foreign countries, although scholars seldom pay attention to the C-E translation of public signs, they study on the use of language of public signs. For example, Elane Shohamy wrote Language in the Public Space about it.
