The successful C-E translation of film titles can summarize the content, theme and artistic value, hence attracting foreign audience and arousing their desire to see it. However, the analysis and study of the English translations of a number of Chinese film titles show that there are still problems remaining to be solved. This paper will concentrate on the methods and principles of C-E translation of film titles from the perspective of adaptation.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

My paper will give a brief introduction of definition and functions of film titles and study the problems existing in C-E translations of Chinese film titles. Standing on the perspective of adaptation, this paper will conclude the methods and principles of C-E translation of film titles.

3. 国内外研究现状

There have been so many researchers who study the translation of film titles. Most of them have studied E-C translation of film titles from adaptation to speech sounds, four-character idioms, poetry, culture and so on.

However，the analysis and study of the English translations of a large number of Chinese film titles show that there are two major problems lying in the translation． The first problem is that the Eng-lish translation of the film title can not summarize the film#8217;s content，theme and artistic value． The second problem is that one film has two or more English titles． In order to solve such problems，the translator should follow information，art and business principles and flexibly adopt different translation methods like transliteration，literal translation，adaptation and creative translation to improve the translation quality of Chinese film titles and increase the competitive and influential power of Chinese films in the international film market．
