1. 研究目的与意义

American consumerism appeared in 20th century put a profound impact on people#8217;s lives and values, which has been thoroughly explored by scholars. However the deep influence consumerism put on sexual relations seems to be ignored relatively. It is a pity since sexual relations, as the most intimate relationship in the world, reflects depth and width of consumerism#8217;s effect better. Theodore Dreiser, the soul of the 20th century American literature, lives in an era in which American society shifts from production-oriented to consumption-oriented. His works give a realistic description of the consumerism-infiltrated American social life and diverse characters inside. Research into sexual relations in his books helps largely to reveal the great power of consumerism at the specific age.

3. 国内外研究现状

American consumerism, as a typical literature phenomenon, has attracted enormous attention from scholars at home and abroad. They have done a lot to study into changes in both their physical and emotional pursuits.

People tend to enjoy themselves more than before and take more care of their status and power. The symbolic value of products outweighs use value. More and more people choose to betray their traditional belief, identified as being moderated, and then drop into endless pursuit of enjoyment.

However, scholars view sexual relations in Dreiser#8217;s works simply as sensitive tragedies, with no further exploration into the respect of consumerism.
