1. 研究目的与意义

F. Scott Fitzgerald was the most influential American novelist of the 1920s; The Great Gatsby was one of the most representative works of him. The novel told us a story about a young man named Gatsby who tried to pursue his dream and finally his dream was shattered. The novel revealed a vivid picture of the 1920#8217;s Americans. At that time, with the development of economy, people#8217;s value had experienced great change. A lot of people tended to pursue profit and material possesion. In this work, Fitzgerald used a mass of symbolism to portray characters and interpret the purport of the novel. The symbols of color, settings, and characters play an important role in revealing the relationship of man and man, man and nature. By analyzing these symbols of The Great Gatsby, we can have a better understanding of the essence of American dream and summarize the reasons of the collapse of American dream on a deeper level.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The main questions: analyze the symbols in The Great Gatsby, the meaning of symbols, summarize the reasons of the collapse of American dream. The research contents: the thesis will be divided into four parts. Frist，introduce the author and the novel. Second, introduce the symbolism in literature. Third, analyze the symbols in The Great Gatsby, including the symbols in color, settings; characters (mainly analyze the symbols in color). The last one, summarize the reasons of the collapse of The Great Gatsby 1.Introduction: 1.1F. 3. 国内外研究现状

The Great Gatsby was the most representative work of F. Scott. Fitzgerald. American dream was an important theme in the contemporary social research. The work had attracted great attention of scholars at home and abroad. Foreign Scholars had done a lot of researches on the great Gatsby, some scholars wrote instructional books. F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby: A Document Volume published by Gail book was an example. According to the research status, the research can be divided into main four directions. First, the theme. American dream was a hot topic in American literature, so a lot of scholars did research on this. Second, research on feminist of The Great Gatsby, some scholars did researches which focus on the relationship of women and material. Third, research on the narrating of The Great Gatsby. The last one, research on stylistics and style. Most foreign scholars analyzed the symbolic meaning of language and structure pattern. F .H layman referred to the symbols of The Great Gatsby by analyzing style and shape. Compared to foreign research on The Great Gatsby, domestic scholars have not studied this work for a long time and Chinese research direction wasn#8217;t as various as foreign research directions. One third of researches wrote about the collapse of American dream. Li liyuan analyzed the novel from the establishment and disillusionment of American dream. Only a few scholars studied on the feminism and symbols of The Great Gatsby. Some scholars mainly talked about the symbols in color, settings and characters. Some scholars mainly studied on the symbols in color. Li Xueshun analyzed the symbols of color and she believed that green stands for a kind of love and faith. Zhang Dongmei analyzed the symbols of the settings, she put emphasis on the symbols of green light, ashes valley, and banquet. About the symbols of characters, Ta Yinghua analyzed Gatsby and Daisy. Yet analysis from a single perspective does not really understand the reasons for the tragic ending of the book, nor does it understand the author''s true intention. So the novel needs to be studied deeply.

4. 计划与进度安排

The plan: After finishing selecting the topic of thesis, I will use the resources of college library and internet materials to collect information about the topic. Then I will analyze the literature and sort them out to determine the orientation and content of my thesis. The process: Before Nov. 10th,2022--To finish selecting the topic of the thesis, collect reasonably literature materials; Before Nov. 30th, 2022-- To finish the research proposal, and read relevant materials; Before Mar. 18th,2022-- To finish the first draft ; Before Apr. 30th,2022-- To finish the modification of the thesis, final draft ; Before May 25th,2022-- To finish the oral defense of the dissertation.
