1. 研究目的与意义
The entry to WTO created great incentive for our uniformity with other countries in business transaction. Business letter, with distinguished social functions as a tool of communication, plays an essential role in International exchange and is used to set up and maintain business relationship between enterprises.
Business letter is closely linked to enterprise interest. The target of two parties before meeting is always decided by business letter, thus, translating letter in correct and appropriate way is beneficial to achieve a consensus. For avoiding misunderstand and failed deal, translating business letter by knowing its syntax characteristic and on some skills or principles is indispensable.A high quality business letter can be noticed by a foreign enterprise and rises its interest to set up cooperate plans, finally, successful collaboration will be done smoothly. On the contrary, obscure or vague used in letter translation may lead to misunderstand, as a result, there is little hope to have a cooperation as expected. Business letter is a symbol of enterprise image and strength. High quality letter can not only reflect the high English level and standard, but also reveal a company image and strength, which enhances the confidence of clients to establish the cooperation with this company.
#8220;7C#8221;principle, a translation skill in business letter, which means completeness, concreteness, correctness, conciseness, clearness, courtesy, and conscientiousness. A formal business letter can ask for and transfer information, deal with affairs in business exchange and enhance the emotional bound between two parties in these principles. A foreign company#8217;s prosperity relies on high quality business letter to a great extent.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
This thesis is intended to analyze characteristics of business letter and current translation situation in business letter in order to draw forth the normative and standard methods in business letter translation, then provides some specific suggestions through some principles like #8220;7C#8221;principle and #8220;Functional Equivalence Theory#8221;. The high quality of letter translation can enhance the emotional bound between two parties as well as bring prosperity of companies to a great extent.
The critical problem need to be solved in this thesis is the normalization of business letter translation. First chapter introduces business letter and its significant role in international communication. Chapter two is an analysis of linguistic features of business letter in three aspects of vocabulary, syntax and style. Chapter three presents #8220;7C#8221; principles, #8220;Functional Equivalence Theory#8221; and translation of words and syntax. Chapter four is conclusion in which it reaffirms the viewpoint between two parties, and distinctive lexical and syntactic feature both should focus on in order to avoid ambiguities and conflicts, thus to guarantee the smooth carrying out of business communication.
3. 国内外研究现状
#8220;7C#8221; principle includes completeness, concreteness, correctness, conciseness, clearness, courtesy, and conscientiousness. The cooperative principle as an original part of 7C was first put forward by America philosopher in 1975. He referred a conductive principle #8220;cooperative principle#8221; from form logic and natural language logic, and then explained the problem of #8220;what to say#8221; and #8220;how to say#8221;. 1983, on the basis of Grice#8217;s study, Leech came up with courtesy principle in Principles of Pragmatics. He deemed that courtesy principle should include six norms: strategy, liberality, praise, modesty, and correspondence. 1984, Bobby D. Sorrels summarized 6C principles in Business Communication Fundamentals. And then Chinese writer Chen fenggui emphasized the importance of euphemism. He suggested that writing structure should be kept integrated through recognizing the whole form and avoiding vague or obscure words. And now, the 7C principle we are familiar with is set down by Zhuang zongyi and Zhou yaozu in 2001, which are regarded as the principle to be complied with in business letter translation.
#8220;Functional Equivalence Theory#8221;, including Dynamic Equivalence and Formal Equivalence two parts, was first put forward by an American translator, Nida. Eugene A. This theory makes it available for readers of translation feel the same way as those of the original. This theory has become the highest standard in Business Letter Translation in consideration of features of business letters, like normalizing, pries word, sample pattern, tactful tone, and its different functions like providing information, communicating and so on. And this theory was applied in a passage, A Study of the Functional Equivalence Theory in the Business Letter Translation in Overseas English journal by Zhang ying in 2012. She concluded that the theory of functional equivalence can be applied to translation of business Letters. However, the application of the theory cannot be effective without a serious consideration of cultural aspects.
