1. 研究目的与意义

The thesis will make a comparative case study of culture-loaded words which are employed in the S.I.Hsiung’s and Xu Yuanchong’s translated version of The Romance of the Western Chamber, intended to compare and evaluate their translation strategies from the perspective of functional equivalence. In addition, the paper is going to find the proper methods for the translation of Chinese classics.

There are several significances of the paper as follows. First of all, translation of Chinese classical works plays a crucial role in spreading Chinese culture. Among the ancient Chinese operas, The Romance of the Western Chamber is the most widespread and influential and it can be referred to be the peak of Chinese opera creation. As one important representative of the Chinese classical drama, the English translation of The Romance of the Western Chamber has a significant influence on promoting Chinese culture. What’s more, although many scholars have made researches on culture-loaded words in The Romance of the Western Chamber, there are only a few studies under the functional equivalence theory. So this paper is expected to draw some attention to the translation of culture-loaded words in The Romance of the Western Chamber based on functional equivalence. Last but not least, the thesis is meant to present some suggestions for translation of culture-loaded words in Chinese literature.

1. Functional Equivalence

1.1 Definition of Functional Equivalence

Functional Equivalence Theory is put forward by Eugene Nida based on his own practice of Bible translation. He defines “Functional Equivalence” as a type of equivalence that target language readers could understand the translation as source language readers understand the original text. From the definition, what Nida focuses and emphasizes is that the target language readers and source language readers ought to have the same feelings roughly. Nida’s Functional Equivalence is based on “the principle of equivalent effect” (Wang amp; Nie, 2016). Functional Equivalence Theory gives priority to receptors and takes receptors’ response into consideration. In the process of translation, a complete equivalence cannot be found between the source language and the target language, therefore different translations actually can represent varying degrees of equivalence. And he replaces dynamic equivalence with functional equivalence because he underlines the concept of function (Zhang, 2015).
