In sports news texts, itinevitably uses a large amount of war metaphors which is considered aneffective discourse strategy. Based on pragmatic analysis, the theme selectsthe discourse of recent English sports news texts as the research text andanalyze them to figure out the pragmatic functions of war metaphors in theEnglish sports news texts.

1. Research of Metaphor
(1) Foreign Research of Metaphor
Thefirst foreign research on metaphor can be traced back to Aristotle in ancientGreece, who made a systematic description of metaphor in his classical works Poetics and Rhetoric (赵丹,2015). For a long time after this period, metaphor wasconsidered a rhetorical device, generally used in poetry and writing. Then alarge number of prominent metaphor scholars emerged, such as uECO, PRicoeur, GLakoff, and others. Numerous conferences were held to discussmetaphorical principles, such as the 'Metaphor and Thought' Symposiumat the University of Illinois in 1977 and the International InterdisciplinarySymposium on Metaphor at the University of California, Davis, in 1978. In the1980s, the book Metaphors We Live By, co-authored by Lakoff and Johansson,proposed the theory of conceptual metaphor and marked the beginning of metaphorresearch from a cognitive perspective.

Thispaper is generally divided into four parts. The first part gives a briefintroduction, telling the backgrounds of conceptual metaphor and war metaphors,the significance of the essay, which also includes the summary of the previousstudies of using war metaphors in English sports news texts. The second part isto expound upon the main reasons of using war metaphors in English sports newstexts, including the similarity of realization, content and spirit betweensports and war. The third part uses examples of war metaphors in recent Englishsports news discourses to illustrate the advantages of war metaphors, mainlyforcing on the powerful description of sports events and the public''''s innerfighting psychology. The fourth part anatomizes the excessive or inappropriateuse of war metaphors by the relevant theories of cognitive linguistics, andsummarizes its drawbacks, mainly giving priority to the over-exaggeration ofsports events and the deviation of citizens'''' perception of sports. Finally, theconclusion part consists of contributions and limitations of the essay. Ithopes to assist readers in seeing clearly the merits and demerits of warmetaphors and make an effort for journalists to use war metaphors correctly andreasonably.
