(1) Foreign Research of Metaphor

Thefirst foreign research on metaphor can be traced back to Aristotle in ancientGreece, who made a systematic description of metaphor in his classical works Poetics and Rhetoric (赵丹，2015). For a long time after this period, metaphor wasconsidered a rhetorical device, generally used in poetry and writing. Then alarge number of prominent metaphor scholars emerged, such as uECO, PRicoeur, GLakoff, and others. Numerous conferences were held to discussmetaphorical principles, such as the 'Metaphor and Thought' Symposiumat the University of Illinois in 1977 and the International InterdisciplinarySymposium on Metaphor at the University of California, Davis, in 1978. In the1980s, the book Metaphors We Live By, co-authored by Lakoff and Johansson,proposed the theory of conceptual metaphor and marked the beginning of metaphorresearch from a cognitive perspective.

Thispaper is generally divided into four parts. The first part gives a briefintroduction, telling the backgrounds of conceptual metaphor and war metaphors,the significance of the essay, which also includes the summary of the previousstudies of using war metaphors in English sports news texts. The second part isto expound upon the main reasons of using war metaphors in English sports newstexts, including the similarity of realization, content and spirit betweensports and war.
