1. 研究目的与意义

Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You is a tragic novel which tells a Chinese American family’s struggle in dual cultural identity. The story begins with Lydia’s death, and then the whole family thrust into a desperate struggle between mother and her children, husband and wife, sisters and brother. The literary characters in this novel all confuse their cultural identity and they struggle their identity in their mix-race family. Thus, it is of great significance to research the identity of offspring of immigrants.

On the one hand, because of Chinese Exclusion Act, the development of Chinese American literature began during World War II. The study of Chinese American literature started relatively late. Sui Sin Far’ s works are among the earliest research subjects. The previous studies mainly focus more on early writers’ their works and there are few researches on recent Chinese American Literature such as Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, Amy Tan’s The Valley of Amazement and Gish Jen’s Typical American and so on. Therefore, this thesis aims to focus on Everything I Never Told You----a top seller in 2015 which provides a new perspective to learn about Chinese American literature.

On the other hand, the dilemma in different cultures usually makes immigrants become the marginal men, which is a common phenomenon in many immigrants societies. The dual identity of immigrants can be directly seen from the dilemma. Everything I Never Told You provides a vivid picture of Chinese American family struggling with such dilemma and conflicts between Western and Chinese culture. Therefore, Everything I Never Told You is a suitable literary work to research the identity of immigrants.
