1. 研究目的与意义

With the developmentof globalization, cultural exchanges between China and the West become more andmore frequent, and a lot of foreign films are introduced into China. However, for native films, due to language barriers and cultural differences, manyaudiences cannot properly understand them. Therefore, subtitle translation isvery important.

Compared withpoetry or novels, subtitle translation of films and TV series has not receivedenough attention in the field of translation. Moreover, the level of subtitletranslation in China is relatively low, and there are various problems in termsof quality. In addition, there is also a lack of theoretical guidance insubtitle translation in China. Therefore, it is very necessary to find theorieswith practical guiding significance for subtitle translation.

Nida''s functional equivalence theory requires the reproduction of source language informationwith natural, appropriate and equivalent target language. The theory’s core is'the target language recipient''s response to the target languageinformation is basically the same as the source language recipient''s responseto the source language information', which is consistent with the goal ofsubtitle translation. Based on the theory of functional equivalence and taking TheGreat Gatsby as an example, this paper demonstrates that the theory offunctional equivalence has practical guiding significance for subtitletranslation and can promote the standardization and systematization of subtitletranslation.

3. 国内外研究现状

In recent years, greatachievements have been made by scholars both at home and abroad in the studiesof subtitle translation. Scholars from various fields have used functionalequivalence theory to study and analyze subtitle translation.

Scholars Zhu Keke and Li Hongli study the subtitletranslation in their master''s thesis. By analyzing culture-loaded words in thesubtitles of The Journey of Civilization, Zhu discusses the translationstrategies adopted by the translators in the process of translation. Shebelieves that the main purpose of Chinese documentaries is to introduce Chineseculture to western audiences. While retaining the Chinese culturalcharacteristics in the translation of culture-loaded words, translators shouldmeet the western understanding requirements and audience feelings, makeappropriate adjustments to the translation according to the target languagereaders'' understanding of Chinese culture, and the translation should also takeinto account the limited length and fleeting characteristics of subtitles. The scholarLi Hongli thinks there is something new as well as breakthrough in Nida’sfunctional equivalence theory. The traditional translation theory focuses onthe form, while Nida emphasizes the reaction of the target language readers. Toget the ideal translation, the most natural and closest equivalence needs to beequivalent to that of the source language readers. What is important is theextent to which receptor correctly understand and appreciate the translatedtext. Being applied to the subtitle translation is that the target audiencesshould understand and appreciate the film as the original film audiences.

Many other scholars have published their researchstatus in domestic and foreign journals. Taking a film or a TV series as anexample, they analyze the guiding significance of functional equivalence theoryfor subtitle translation. Such as scholars Wang Jie and Zou Jianling, theirthesis takes the subtitle translation of The Big Bang Theory as theexample to analyze how subtitle translation helps audience to understand andenjoy the humorous dialogues from the perspective of functional equivalence theory.Based on exemplification, the thesis discusses the principles and procedures inthe subtitle translation from the aspects of linguistic, stylistic, andcultural equivalence to help people to better understand the subtitletranslation and promote Chinese-English cultural communication. Wang Hongxia, ascholar from the School of Humanities, Tianjin University of Finance andEconomics, analyzes the translation of humorous dialogue subtitles in TheBig Bang Theory from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. However, her research is more detailed, analyzing only the humorous language insubtitles. She believes that many Chinese audiences do not fully understand theEnglish language and Western culture, so translation becomes an important wayto help Chinese audiences appreciate the story better. Moreover, humor is notonly at the linguistic level, but also at the cultural level. Her article makesan in-depth analysis of the subtitle translation of the sitcom The Big BangTheory from the perspective of functional equivalence theory through exampleresearch method, so as to help The Chinese audience better understand theculture reflected in its humorous language. Apart from that, the scholar ChenDan believes that subtitle translation, as an important part of a film, determines the recognition of a film in the target market. Taking the film HiddenFigures as an example, she discusses the application of functionalequivalence theory in film subtitle translation by combining the temporal andspatial limitations, popularity and integration of subtitle translation, anddiscusses the corresponding translation strategies and methods, so as toachieve semantic, stylistic and cultural equivalence.
