2. 研究内容和预期目标
Ernest Miller Hemingway is one of the most representative #8220;Lost Generation#8221; novelists in American#8217;s twentieth century. His novels are famous in the world. In addition to his #8220;iceberg principle#8221; writing style and the #8220;message type#8221; concise language, the most important thing is that he keeps exploring the #8220;death theme#8221; in his works. Hemingway successfully creates countless #8220;tough guy#8221; images. At the same time, Hemingway#8217;s works also reveal his cognitive process of the #8220;death#8221;. The snows of Kilimanjaro is a stream of consciousness novel whose theme is death. The work inherits Ernest Hemingway#8217;s style----simple and concise. The novel mainly depicts the protagonist#8217;s inner experience, uses the technique of stream of consciousness and gets rid of the shackles of the time and space to achieve a jump and fast seamless connection between thought and reality; though the snow mountains, hyenas, vultures and a series of rich in symbolic imagery, the reader can dig out the deep connotation hidden from the refined language, which forms a huge iceberg hidden under the sea, so that the short story has connotation of the long story, which becomes one of the classic works in Hemingway#8217;s art career. It is felt that Hemingway#8217;s literary creation is closely related to his legendary personal experiences. So chapter one is the introduction of Hemingway#8217;s life and major works. Based on his life experience, of World War 1 and of the following series of wars (Spanish Civil War and World War 2 especially), his exploration and understanding of death emerged and developed, and also influence his later writing style. Chapter two expounds the writing technique of stream of consciousness in the snows of Kilimanjaro, including features of stream of consciousness novels and the embodiment of iceberg theory as well as the application of multi-angle narrative technique in the snows of Kilimanjaro. Chapter three focus on the analysis of the formation process of Hemingway#8217;s view of death from his three different life stages. Firstly, due to the influence by the #8220;death#8221; of his grandfather and father in Hemingway#8217;s childhood, Hemingway formed a kind of unconscious death knot. Secondly, it analyzes the influence of his death consciousness during or after Hemingway joined in the World War during his adulthood. Thirdly, it has a deeper exploration of Hemingway#8217;s death consciousness during his old ages and the change by the impact of the social environment. Finally, this chapter also analyzed Hemingway#8217;s death knot from aesthetic perspective. Chapter four studied the symbolism of the snows of Kilimanjaro, analyzed how the symbolism as an effective means to express Hemingway#8217;s understanding of life and death. Finally, it discussed the philosophical ultimate meaning of life. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis. The significance of Hemingway#8217;s death theme is probed conscientiously in this thesis. Hemingway#8217;s exploration and understanding of life and death has sublimated to how to face life and death. His contemplation on human beings#8217; eternal death theme and ultimate value of life condense into the soil of the treasure-house of world literature, as well as American ideological and cultural progress. They unceasingly give the later generation deep-going life enlightenment and artistic nourishment and guide their life and activity rigorously. What#8217;s more, the in-depth research on Hemingway#8217;s death theme undoubtedly promotes surveying the Western social condition and ideological state of Hemingway#8217;s time from a much deeper level. Hemingway#8217;s experiences with death, his confrontations and fight, painful or brave, and experiences in life, enjoyable or suffering, form a vivid artistic portraiture of the waste land of 20th century Western world. 3. 国内外研究现状
The theme of death regularly appears in Hemingway#8217;s works obviously. Some western scholars also did some research on death theme in his works. There into, Malcolm Cowley(1983)believes that #8220;most of his works...generally speaking are writing specifically about the death theme#8221;. While Herbert Ernest Bates(1943) is literally thinking #8220;Hemingway actually only has one theme, that is the death#8221;. For the close ties between his creations and death, Hemingway in his Death in the Afternoon also admits that he is trying to learn to write. He starts from one of the simplest question. And the most fundamental problem is caused by violent death. Death is one of the theme could be used in writing. So, death is an important point when Hemingway is engaged in his creation. His artistic descriptions of death express his concerns and thoughts about society, life and history. Discussing Hemingway#8217;s creation, therefore, the death descriptions will help us to study Hemingway#8217;s thoughts and his creative arts in a deeper way.
