The TV series portrays an extended family, consisting of three small families, which presents the typical American family. American family culture, totally different from Chinese ones, is outstandingly distinctive among diversified family cultures over the world.

Modern Family has generally received positive reviews from critics. The show has won Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of the past five years and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series four times so far, twice for Eric Stone street and twice for Ty Burrell, as well as the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series twice for Julie Bowen. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series #8211; Musical or Comedy in 2011.

The widely gained popularity implies that it sketches the general way how American family live, which is real and symbolic. By peering into the television programme, we are enabled to be a probe into the general American family life, henceforth have a better consideration of the current American family life culture. Culture understanding is the initiative step and premise for us to better understand a different country. Compared with cultures in other fields, such as politics and religion and so on, family culture is much closer to our life. Thus, it is much easier for us to be comprehensive of.

3. 国内外研究现状

The importance of cross-culture understanding has attracted increasing attention both nationally and internationally, especially in academic field. It is now widely acknowledged that culture understanding is the precondition to have a better grasp of other knowledge, whether politics or economy, religion or society. This is extremely true and beneficial in literature study. Nowadays, immigration and emigration have become a phenomenon. Population is frequently transferred among countries. Immigrants and emigrants have to adapt themselves to a totally new lifestyle, getting accustomed to the way local people live. Thus, the study of family culture is gaining ascending importance with days passing by,. In response to this inevitable trend, more and more scholars are riveting their attention on the research of family culture. Study on family culture has gained unprecedented importance and is playing a significant role in the cross-culture study. Nevertheless, even though this field is prospering, it takes time for this subject to grow from infants into maturity. Generally speaking, family culture researching anticipates a bright future but it still has a long way to go. Reasons are as follows. Firstly, there are still people who consider family culture as a branch of multi-culture study which should not be deliberately paid much attention to or spent many efforts on. Secondly, family culture itself is hard to define the boundary because it is often related with other cultures such as social culture. Thirdly, this field is on the emerging and lacks systematic research methods. However, anyway, supposing more people support it and pay attention to it, family culture will find its place in cross-culture study. It is generally a prominent field worth making contributions to.

1、Gathering relevant information on the Internet.

2、Watching the television program Modern Family, finding out some representing episodes and referring them to the real life, hence analyzing the problem being discussed.
