1. 研究目的与意义
In China, the aim of English teaching is developing the academic abilities of students. As a result, second-language learners as we are, Chinese students find it still difficult to talk to foreigners in a fluent and proper way after a long-term study, although they all have a good understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, which has become a huge issue among college students. What, then, is the point of learning a second language? From my point of view, the point is to speak it in a native way rather than study its grammar and vocabulary. That is to say, although linguistic and pragmatic abilities are both important to second-language acquisition, pragmatic abilities play a more significant role in expressing.My article is about the empirical research on pragmatic abilities of NUFE students, the analysis of the statistics, as well as the solutions to develop students#8217; competence. And I am going to get some specific statistics through the research among NUFE students to express how serious the issue is and try to develop some solutions to the problem.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
My paper is based on pragmatic theories, and focuses on English pragmatic abilities of NUFE students. Specific statistics should be collected to gather real information for students#8217; pragmatic competence, from my point of view, which will not appear as good as I expect to be. As a result, both school officials and teachers should take action to help students improve English pragmatic abilities; in the meantime, students also should pay attention to pragmatic competence rather than linguistic competence.

3. 国内外研究现状
As a language, English has been gaining popularity since 1980s in China. However, although the definition of pragmatic competence is now widely introduced to college students, there are still a few people paying attention to college students#8217; real English pragmatic abilities. To be specific, there have been many researches about the introduction of pragmatic abilities in English learning, while few of which focuses on the investigation of pragmatic competence in English learning of Chinese students. #8220;Nowadays, every course setting and book, even English teachers say that the final aim of English teaching is to develop students#8217; foreign communication abilities#8221;(Shu dingfang 2004: 14). Many other Chinese scholars offered same ideas in their books, such as He ziran, who wrote Pragmatics and Language Learning and Jia yuxin, who wrote Cross-cultural Communication.
What I have found out is that most of paper which concentrates on students#8217; English pragmatic competence is written by Chinese researchers. Because of specific geographical and cultural difference, linguists that come from different culture background may find it difficult to make investigations on Chinese students#8217; real English abilities, which finally result in the little attention to Chinese students English abilities from western countries. Therefore, I do hold the view that the area I focus on needs to be further developed.
4. 计划与进度安排
This thesis is based on pragmatic theories, and the related study is divided into two parts: the first part is the research on current situation of pragmatic abilities of NUFE students, and the questionnaire is selectively taken from He ziran#8217;s research, as well as the test items from my practice; the second part is the analysis of the research and the action both students and teachers in NUFE should take to develop students#8217; pragmatic competence.
In the meantime, according to the statistics of the questionnaire, I summarize the factors that influence the current situation among NUFE students from a macroscopic view and make several suggestions, including improving course setting, teaching method, contents of course, test and evaluation system, as well as Intercultural Communication Atmosphere.
