In the past forty years, Morrison has published 10 greatnovels including The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Beloved and a largenumber of literature reviews. Morrison''s novels have full-bodied black culturetrait. The themes are profound and complex. The characters she has created are three-dimensionaland versatile. The discourse in her novels is dignified and lively at the sametime. These novels illustrate the stories about the black history. Due to theprominent contribution in the field of literary creation, Morrison has won theAmerican Fiction Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize for Literature and KennedyAward, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the National Book Foundation OutstandingContribution Award and the National Humanities Medal (2000), etc.

Beloved was created in 1987 byToni Morrison. In this novel, the image is endowed with special meaning. Thisarticle tried to show the black history and explore the deep theme connotationof this novel through the image decoding. In this paper, the author thinks thatby describing different images, Morrison vividly depict the characters and therelationship between the contradictions. These images become the language toolsof the novel which plays an important role in depicting character, showing contradictoryrelations, revealing the theme of the novel. This paper aims to reveal thetheme of love and freedom of this novel by interpreting the images.
