1. 研究目的与意义

Mark Twain is a famous American writer as well as the founder of critical realism in the United States. He experienced the process which is from the initial development of capitalism to imperialism. Thus his work criticizes the unreasonable phenomenon or the ugliness of human nature to expresses the strong sense of justice and a concern for ordinary people. Mark Twain, as the representative of critical realism literature, put his keys of works rooted in every aspect of social reality. With life experience deepened, Mark Twain had a more sober understanding that the social reality of the United States. America''s economy is not as prosperous as it seems. He began to explore some profound social problems in his works. Mark Twain was good at using humor and irony to describe life scenes and shape characters. Thus I have a desire to observe the American political system, life style, thinking and exploring period of moral sentiments with the help of his works and the black humorous style of writing.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The content of the research is given priority to the unique art of black humor of Mark Twain#8217;s novels. Firstly the humor of Mark Twain''s novel is constructed in the specific cultural background. The cultural background plays an extremely exaggerated artistic imagination on the basis of the traditional humor of the western United States. In this sense, the works become thicker and vivid and characters become more fullness. Secondly novels often utilize the first calling as a hero that he is innocent, honest and ignorance, but the results always backfire. Mark Twain made these arrangements deliberately to reflect the gap between ideal and reality. The third is differences of writing characteristics in the early stage and latter period. Mark Twain#8217; novels are famous for sarcastic tone. In the later period, the style became more intense especially. Thus, Mark Twain is called as Lincoln in the history of American literature.

In the thesis, I plan to have a clear analysis of appearance and influence in novels that the American frontier life made by studying several typical works, such as the Adventure of Tom Sawyer, the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and History of the Mississippi River. What#8217;s more, the emotion reflected by novels has changed from being relaxed to being pessimistic. I want to explore the reason for this change.

3. 国内外研究现状

In recent years, Mark Twain#8217;s language style has received widespread attention. Many scholars both at home and abroad have done in-depth research and discussion on these aspects such as from humor, oral speaking and irony. For example, LaiLingfang have written a paper called an analysis of the reason of Mark Twain#8217;s style and the reason. The purpose of this paper is to study the change of Mark Twain''s writing style and the reasons. The paper reflects that in different periods, Mark Twain had the different work style from the initial easy humor to the bitter irony, the last desperate and strong. The transition from free competition of capitalism to imperialism has caused great influence to the change of its writing style as well as Mark Twain''s personal bumpy journey in life have caused great influence to the change of its writing style. LaiLingfang has utilized the social environment and personal experience of Mark Twain to analyze him to get further understanding. Another learned man, WenXin, analyzed Mark Twain#8217;s writing style with help of the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn. Wen made an analysis of Mark Twain#8217;s unique writing style from the structure of the story, story theme, character description and language description and so on. This book discloses decadent bourgeois way of life and the sins of the slave system.

Frankly their research has achieved great success. When I analyze Mark Twain#8217; writing style, I could acquire detailed knowledge of the author#8217;s experience and the social environment. Meanwhile, I could take advantage of books that he wrote. However with the development of the reality and the changing way of thinking, there are more problems occurring. Thus I will explore the reason of his language style and influence combining with Mark Twain''s life experience in realistic perspective.

4. 计划与进度安排

The topic of thesis is the black humor in Mark Twain#8217;s works. The topic aims to reveal the role of humor and satire to reflect the real life by studying the language style of Mark Twain#8217;s works. What#8217;s more, it can help the author express thoughts and feelings as well as help us explore America''s social contradiction, the political system and ways of thinking in that times. Firstly, it is essential to know about Mark Twain#8217;s life background, life experience and era background because environment and experience are often the source of inspiring creation. Then for The adventure of Tom Sawyer as example, I will make analysis of a variety of figures of novels and point out the expression of the black humor to study the author#8217;s writing style directly. The third part is the analysis of the different features of early and late writing. Meanwhile it is necessary to analysis the cause of the change.
