1. 研究目的与意义
At first, I think many people have keen interest on this female author, Emily Bronte, her short life, her different experiences and her everything. I wonder why she wrote such a tragedy from beginning to the end. What she had met and did during her thirty years. Personally, I think she has the ideal characteristics of a legend female. And she makes people have desire to explore her life and mind. So it is helpful to know this woman by learning her work, Wuthering Heights.
Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte is a novel filled with many emotions and activity. Her characters represent a bitter and drastic conflict between love and hate.It was published in 1847, and many people do not know the work, Wuthering Heights, didn#8217;t gain immediate success after its publication, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural. It was not until 1850, when Wuthering Heights received a second printing with an introduction by Emily#8217;s sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. Today it is widely regarded as one of the great novels of English literature. And Emily has left an indelible mark in the literary world by virtue of this work.
And also the novel tells the story of love and revenge, spanning over two generations and thirty years, through a love tragedy, it reflects an abnormal social picture. In this novel, everywhere you can see the shadow of tragedy. But many scholars and critics still have lots of controversies and arguments of the theme, tragedy color and significance of this great work, which many analysis are just around the two hero''''''''s love tragedy, and in fact it is a complex and big tragedy plot throughout the work, it is not only on Catherine and Heathcliff''''''''s love, so for the whole, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the tragedy theme in Wuthering Heights, so that more readers can see the expression of the deep meanings of the work, rather than a so-called love story. And I do believe a completely and in-depth analysis about the Wuthering heights is better for us to study the novel well.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Wuthering Heights is relevant for all time. As time goes by, the work shines more and more brilliantly and the author''''''''s status among the Victorian writers keeps rising. It has a kind of everlasting artistic charm like #8220;the mysterious and attractive smiling on the corner of Mona Lisa''''''''s mouth'. Critics and readers have various ideas and comments about the understanding and artistic skills of the work.
Emily Bronte#8217;s is a mysterious poet and novelist, her only powerful novel Wuthering Heights not only creates a harrowing tale of passion and tragedy with happy ending, but also shows a full picture of Victorian Age. In this romantic novel, Emily not only creates Gothic atmosphere, but also explores some major themes of love and passion, revenge, nature and culture, religion. They are violating Victorian values and tastes. Actually, Wuthering Heights is no more than an autobiography of Emily herself. Through it, Emily#8217;s gloomy psyche, mysterious life and Victorian social criticism are better expressed.
In the article, I will focus on the following questions. For example, I will make an analysis of the tragic love of the two heroes, Catherine and Heathcliff, and it is necessary to find out what reasons make this tragedy. Such as these two heroes#8217; own personalities, the special social background of Victorian Age and the complex relationships of the characters in Wuthering Heights. Maybe the author#8217;s personal intension is one of my study points.
3. 国内外研究现状
Since the book#8217;s publication, Wuthering Heights has captured the attention and imagination of researchers. They hold many controversial views about the love tragedy between Catherine and Heathcliff. Some of them attribute the cause of tragedy to Heathcliff#8217;s revenge. Some scholars argue that Heathcliff#8217;s revenge is acceptable and reasonable; Heathcliff has experienced tremendous suffering, pain injury and shame in his life. So it is difficult to say that Heathcliff is good or bad, because with the change of his background and status, he performed different with different motivations.
Also someone believes that Catherine has unilateral culpability for this tragedy. Because of her betray and money worship. People hold different ideas about their tragic love. And people could feel that Catherine is a typical female image of that time.
Catherine has both thoughts of freedom and spirit of revolt and vanity and class prejudice.
4. 计划与进度安排
The completion of a thesis of 6,000 words which focuses on the manifestations, reasons and consequences of Heathcliff#8217;s revenge and Catherine#8217;s dual personality, which is intended to show the change of human nature in the complicated society and the origin of the disappearance of human nature. And I will use following methods and steps to help me get good preparation and finish this article well.
Consultation: On the base of leading a lot of literatures, analyzing the reasons and characters from different sides.
