Basically, gothic novel is a negative reflection of safe politics and prosperous business. For readers, it refers to the horror characters of novels. Unlike other types of writing which directly express ideal society, politics and moral views, gothic writing reveals the darkness of humanity. This kind of literature is defined as horror, torment and death, and it is usually related to ghost, witchcraft and some psychopathologies, etc. However, Edgar Allen Poe is the most famous writer who developed Gothic novel to internalization. Bernard Shaw, one of the most distinguished English literature giants, once said, there were two great writers in America---Edgar Allen Poe and Mark Twain. His words reveal that Poe, as a poet, novelist and critic, occupied an important place in American literature. Detective novels and horror novels made Allen Poe become a symbol of American gothic fiction because Poe created a series of symbolic and popular gothic stories which have rigid structures, well-organized plots and outstanding effects, such as The Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death. Each action, description and even every sentence has a unified effect that is to set a ghastly, horrific, morbid and creepy atmosphere. As a result, readers would feel a sense of scary. The Fall of the House Usher and Ligeia are two short novel with distinct gothic characters. Poe attracted readers by his contagious language that can make readers feel personally on the scene.

1.The introduction of Goth and gothic literature: Gothic literature comes from the term #8220;Goth#8221; which originally refers to a tribe lived in northern Europe, and it was usually used to describe an architecture style in middle century. The gothic architecture was very popular at that time, and then the word #8220;Goth#8221; became another new type of novels called Gothic literature.

2.The introduction of author---Edgar Allan Poe: Allan Poe is a famous American poet, writer, editor and literary critic, and he is considered as one of the most distinguished writers in the 19th century. He developed mystery and terror to an unprecedented degree.

Allan Poe is a controversial writer who had great influence on American literature, and people give him mixed comments. During over a hundred years, western literary critics have been studying on his works constantly, as well as in China. Many great authors made total different judgments in different times, for example, Whitman said Poe#8217;s works were among the electric lights of imaginative literature, brilliant and dazzling, but with no heat. However, some people just ignored the talent of Allen Poe and they believed that his works are immoral and he is demon rum and a disciple of the devil. Since 20th century, Allen Poe, as the writer of American romantic period, had aroused public extensive interest and attention.

In China, Poe#8217;s works had great effects on Chinese literature, especially during last century which is around the May 4th movement, his works improved the anti-feudal movement, and Luxun appreciated the horror atmosphere created by Poe, saying #8220;Allen Poe#8217;s Black Cat does scare me.#8221;(鲁迅全集，1973:365) After liberation, Chinese people considered his novels as decadents, so they stopped studying basically. But through the reform and opening-up, there was a big improvement of research about Allen Poe and different and relatively complete versions of translated fictions were published, such as 《爱伦#183;坡短篇小说集》 translated by Chen liangting and 《爱伦#183;坡神秘小说集》. In 1998, 《爱伦#183;坡短篇小说集》 was revised by People#8217;s Literature Publishing House so that the tell-tale heart, the fall of the house of usher and Ligeia were involved. Nowadays, we have all Chinese versions of Poe#8217;s novels and poems. In summary, there are two developing stages of studying on Allen Poe: from 19982 to 1998, it was starting stage and the materials about Allen Poe were less, but after 1998, the research became more and more, especially in these years, scholars are largely interested in his works and they deliver thousands of articles.
