Among his numerous works, most people would keep nothing in mind but The Old Man and the Sea, especially the line #8220;one could be destroyed but never beaten#8221; which has been appreciated by the whole world. Many reasons account for the huge success of The Old Man and the Sea. One of these reasons, however, takes most of the credit, that is, the successful portrayal of Santiago with complexity. This thesis focuses on his image of elegance, maturity, heroism as well as bravery. 3. 国内外研究现状
The Old Man and the Sea aroused great attention from readers and the academia both home and abroad as soon as it came to public. During the half century before 2000, readers and reviewers mostly focus on issues like code heroes, iceberg theory and tragedy consciousness, resulting in fruitful outcomes. Since 2000, it is still a popular research object in the academia. But angles of research have shifted to areas like critics of ecology, forms of art and so on. In American Literature, published by Macmillan Company in 1984, the author Keats George illustrated the novel#8217;s protagonist from four diverse aspects, Santiago as a code hero, a psychological cripple, a Christ-like man, a tragic figure, leaving a brand new impression on readers. Literary circles in China started the research of Hemingway in 1930s. It was reported that Huang Yuan was the first man in China to publish about Hemingway#8217;s works. He analyzed the features of realism exhaustively. Most discussed and explored the main character from a traditional view. Then, the image of code hero gradually came on stage. The reason why Chinese cared much about the image of code hero is because it caters to the demands of contemporary times, which has broad market in China.
