Euphemism, as a linguistic phenomenon in culture, is widely used and studied in every field of the world. Euphemism plays a surely important role in people#8217;s communication. People may use euphemism as twists and turns in the process of linguistic communication. Euphemism can be a more subtle way to express some kind of #8220;embarrassing#8221; words which can not be directly showed. Euphemism used in English can greatly avoid awkwardness and show one#8217;s respect. It is deeply rooted in social life and has a great influence on social communication. As an indispensable and natural part of English language, English euphemism has attracted people#8217;s attention for a long time. Euphemism is used like a kind of lubrication, which can make communication go on smoothly and successfully.

English euphemism is not only a linguistic concept, but also acts as a connection between China and western culture. English euphemism truly reflects the lives, believes and values of western people and their history. Actually, English euphemism is a particularly good media for us to have access to different culture. Through the study of English euphemism, we can have a briefly grasp of western culture. Thus we can promote international communication and global cooperation.

These years, American television sitcoms have been under the center of spot lights and have caused widespread responses. People who interested in these shows are addicted to their compact plots and spiffy dialogues. While English euphemism is widely used in these sitcoms and with tactfully application. There is no doubt that, American television sitcoms have acted as a good tool for us to discover English euphemism in a totally different way.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

In this paper, I will first generally give a brief introduction to English Euphemism, which includes: the origin of English euphemism; the definition of English euphemism; the classifications of English euphemisms and the stylistic euphemisms.

Then I will analyse the formation and pragmatic features of English euphemism. In this part, there may be divided into two section: the formation of English euphemism and the pragmatic features of English euphemism.

For the formation of English euphemism, may including: phonetic devices; spelling devices; vocabulary devices; grammatical devices and rhetorical devices.

3. 国内外研究现状

There have been many researches on the research and the study of English euphemism domestically. The emergence of euphemism can be traced back to the early seventeen eighties, recognized by a British writer-- Gorge Blunt. He defined Euphemism as a good favorable interpretation of a bad word. Later on the study of euphemism attracted a large number of scholars(Menken, Bolinger, Neaman, and Sliver), where Menken in the #8220;historical basis and development of The American Language#8221; is very detailed description of euphemism.

In1981, A Dictionary of Euphemism and Other Double came out, symbolized the great achievements have been made in euphemism research. In 1991, Allen and Burridge have published a monograph on euphemism, made a more systematic explanation of euphemism, provides direction and research direction of very valuable for later.

The study of euphemism by Chinese scholars to pay attention to the field is from nineteen seventies, the euphemism books began publishing, for example, 刘纯豹《英语委婉语词典》；李国南《英语中的委婉语》 ；彭文钊《委婉语-社会文化域的语言映射》 ；束定芳《委婉语新探》 ；束定芳和徐金元《委婉语研究：回顾与前瞻》 ；徐海铭《委婉语的语用研究》and so on.
