1. 研究目的与意义
In 21th century, globalization has become an inevitable trend around the world. Under this background, study on the cultural exchanges between countries is becoming more important in English language and literature learning. The basis of cross-cultural communication is being familiar with both Chinese and English culture. About Chinese culture, we don#8217;t only need to know it from Chinese view; we also need to know what it is in foreigners#8217; view. Pearl Buck was a typical inter-lingual and cross-cultural writer and the first female writer awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in America. She was born in America but grew up in China. Chinese traditional culture had a profound influence on her, which were shown on the words and sentences of her works and her life was closely bound with Chinese culture. Because of her unique family background, she was brought to China when she was 3-month old. Pearl Buck lived in China for long time, and during her stay, she lived in the poor community, neighboring to Chinese people, which lead to her deep understanding of ordinary people and touching Chinese original culture. Influenced by two kinds of culture, she absorbed the humanism in the Chinese culture and western philanthropic humanitarian thought; she devoted herself to the communication of China and western countries; she tried to use the view of Chinese to introduce China to the world, and use the culture as the breakthrough point to describe Chinese country and urban life; she set up the bridge of cultural exchange between east and west.
The Good Earth, one of her representative works, inherited the Chinese excellent culture heritage and writing characteristics which brought her the reputation of the Nobel Prize, for describing Chinese peasant life truly and vividly, like an epic. As a foreign writer, Buck depicted the life in China faithfully under the background at that time, instead of indulging in her own fantasies. A Chinese writer had said: Generally, Buck was very familiar with peasant life in China. Under her pen, we can feel her sympathy for Chinese people, and feel the same sadness of characters in the work. So, to know what the Chinese traditional cultures were in foreigners#8217; eyes, The Good Earth by Pearl Buck was a typical case, with no doubt. The Good Earth described the family life of Wang Long, a Chinese traditional peasant, from various aspects. In the description of daily life, many Chinese traditional cultures were depicted and introduced to people, such as traditional land consciousness, descendants consciousness, marriage and funeral culture, etc. So, to study the Chinese culture elements in The Good Earth can introduce Chinese culture well and promote cultural exchanges.
Buck and her works have taught us to pay attention to the historical investigation of different cultures, the mutual respect for each other#8217;s tradition and looking for values in common, as well as taught us to develop the spirit of being open-minded and learning modestly towards different culture, which should be concerned in cross-cultural communication today. So, Pearl Buck and her works are rich cultural resources which worth deep study.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Generally, this thesis is planned to describe the main theme and artistic characteristics from two aspects. One is the relation between the land and the rise and fall of family; the other is the relation between the land and the change of human nature; the thesis is planned to study the Chinese sentiment from aspects of land complex, hardworking, miserable life of peasant, etc. In detail, the thesis will point out the two major concepts throughout The Good Earth-land consciousness and life consciousness. The life consciousness contains resistance to death, curse of gods and descendants consciousness. Resistance to death is the maintenance of life; curse of gods is the respect for life; descendants consciousness is the direct embodiment of life consciousness. Through the analysis of characters, character and quality of Chinese farmers will be depicted. By analyzing Alan from a feminist perspective, this thesis is going to show Chinese women#8217;s obedience and rebellion to patriarchy in the early 20th century. By analyzing Wang Lung from a patriarchy perspective, this thesis is going to show Chinese men#8217;s patriarchy consciousness in family, filial piety to the elder and land complex in the early 20th century. Through analysis of people#8217;s daily life, some specific Chinese cultural customs such as marriage culture, fertility culture as well as the funeral culture will be introduced in the thesis. Ⅰ.Introduction
3. 国内外研究现状
Since Pearl Buck#8217;s work was published, domestic and foreign research related to her and her works are countless. However, because of the particularity of personal identity of Buck and the change of political situation, domestic and foreign research is influenced inevitably.
Foreign research: The United States is Pearl Buck#8217;s hometown, so Buck''''''''s abroad study is given priority to by the United States. American were curious about the East in 1930s and 1940s, so she became the best-selling author immediately after her work-The Good Earth, which reflected the true Chinese society without the excessive vulgar tone of Orientalism, was put in America#8217;s bookshelves. Some data showed that Buck#8217;s works were translated into foreign languages mostly in America in the 20th century. #8220;Her works are spread so widely that can be found in most libraries. By depicting Chinese life with sympathy and vividly, she changes Chinese images in west and makes America readers begin to respect China and Chinese culture. This is unprecedented.#8221; Charles S. Braden said. New York Times claimed that Pearl Buck has depicted a happy China, without a little mysterious and exotic emotional appeal. Though Pearl Buck is admired and respected by most common readers, Buck is one of the most controversial writers in American academia. For a long time, most people just regarded Buck as a best-selling author, she were not given the same literature status and evaluation as other Nobel Prize owners by America academic circle. First of all, Pearl Buck was free from mainstream of America literature. On the subject, she chose Chinese common people and Chinese country life, instead of cultural elite, as main body of her works, which were not familiar by most American. Besides, she embraced totally different affection towards China. What#8217;s more, there is a saying that, because Pearl Buck was the first female writer wining the Nobel Prize in Literature in America, so it was unacceptable for most male writes in America. Until 1992, Randolph-Macon Woman#8217;s College, Buck#8217;s old school, held the international symposium on Pearl Buck''''''''s birth in one hundred, which brought a lot of progress in research on Pearl Buck and her works. In the 21th century, American scholars are applying new perspective and method for evaluating this great female writer.
Domestic research: As in America, review and research about Pearl Buck and her works has also undergone a bumpy journey. Generally speaking, it is divided into 3 periods. The first period was 1930s and 1940s, which is called the initial research phase. In this period, a lot of her works were translated into China. The translation of The Good Earth was initially published by Oriental from January 1932. Unlike America academic circle, scholars in Chinese academic circle held various attitudes towards Pearl and her works, including basic affirmation, basic disapproval and mixed assessment. Among these, people who were positive were in the majority. For instance, George Ye regarded The Good Earth as the epic which reflected Chinese farmers'''''''' life. Those who held missed assessment attitude pointed out that though Pearl Buck had deep sympathy towards Chinese and in her work, she can#8217;t get rid of the #8220;Germanic origins#8221; and blend the country she depicted. All the characters in The Good Earth can#8217;t represent common Chinese. Those who held disapproval attitude thought that Pearl Buck exaggerated description of Chinese shortcomings. What she described in the work can#8217;t even be found in real world in China. They called The Good Earth a masterpiece written for higher Caucasian. The second period was 1950s and 1960s. In this period, China and America were in the stage of cold war, when serious ideological confrontation cut the relation in the political, economic, and cultural fields. The disapproval of Pearl Buck was overwhelming with political complexion, which was comprehensive and fundamental. The third period started from 1980s to now. In this period, domestic research on Pearl Buck has undergone magic development. With the further increase of the pace of reform and opening-up of our country, Pearl Buck who was regarded as the bridge combining Chinese and western culture, caused attention of our literature field. Scholars apply new methods for studying Chinese traditional culture elements in The Good Earth, from a more open and scientific perspective. More seminars are held regularly to study Pearl Buck and her works, which means that research on Pearl Buck, has come to new stage. To learn her affection for China well, more research should be taken to Chinese traditional cultural elements in The Good Earth.
