1. 研究目的与意义
The family is the most important place for children to carry on the enlightenment education. Thus family education has a very important role in the development of good habits and intellectual development in the future. With the rise of the modern quality education, nowadays, family education is more and more cause the attention of the society. Different education purposes, education contents and education methods create different results. To improve the international competitiveness of our country in the future, the key is to improve the personnel quality, which must start from the family education.
This passage studies the differences between Chinese and American education family. By comparing Chinese and Western family education, author wants to enjoy cultural complementary and find the direction of the development of Chinese family education.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
This paper intends to analyze the difference between Chinese and American education family in the Joy Luck Club by using Edward Hall#8217;s theory on high-context and low-context culture. This essay consists of four parts. Chapter one is about high-context and low-context theory. Chapter two keeps eyes on the conflicts between Chinese and American family education. These conflicts reflect three aspects--education purpose, education content, and education method. Chapter three analyzes the direction of the development of Chinese family education. And chapter four sums up these differences, influences and the author#8217;s expectation on Chinese family education.
3. 国内外研究现状
As the novel the Joy Luck Club wins world fame, the researches on this representative novel by scholars at home and broad has achieved many basic and acknowledged agreements. Many papers and dissertations study this novel from Chinese and Western culture and family value.
Edward Hall contends culture contains high-context culture and low-context culture. The society of high-context culture usually has longer history. In a high-context culture, there are many contextual elements that help people to understand each other. As a result, much is taken for granted. On the contrary, the society of low-context culture usually has shorter history. Therefore, in a low-context culture, the communication needs more explanation. From value#8217;s aspect, people in high-context culture focus on collectivism, while people in low-context culture highlight individualism. Chinese culture belongs to high-context culture, while American culture belongs to low-context culture. This is why there are sharp conflicts between Chinese and American culture.
Because America has advanced productivity and commodity economy, more employment opportunities, and small pressure to survive, American career choice is wide. American parents think there is no difference between jobs as long as their children can survive in the society. By contrast, the higher survival pressures narrow Chinese career choice. Chinese parents think if you get a good academic performance, you can find a good job, and you will be able to live a stable life.
