1. 研究目的与意义

Language is the tool for social communication. People use language to communicate with each other in a number of different ways, for a variety of different purposes on different occasions. Due to the fact that language use varies according to situations, we have a lot of language varieties in the actual use of language, which form the category of register. As one of the important theories in SFGs, the theory of register has been widely employed in many areas with its powerful features and functions. The register theory has brought new directions and ideas into traditional translation theory and expanded the research field of the present translation.

Thus, in the process of translation, it is important for the translator to take into account all three register variables to understand the meaning of the source text completely, comprehensively, and then in the target text the translator should replicate the register features as in the original, properly showing the corresponding field, mode and tenor. Just as M.A.K. Halliday says, 'The notion of register is at once very simple and very powerful'. It is no doubt that the application of this theory in translation can help us grasp the language features and understand the source text correctly and it provides a forceful guarantee to realize the inter-lingual meaning transferring successfully.

Regrettably, the research on Register and its application hasn''''''''t gone so far and plays a minor role on the vast stage. After a probe of the history of register and scholars'''''''' views, the author tries to analyze the source text and realize the equivalence between source text and target language from the three variables of register- field, tenor and mode.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The paper analyses the register theory and its application in translation. Based on the register theory, Halliday insists that the register features of the source text should be reproduced, showing the corresponding field, mode and tenor in the target text.

So the key point to be solved is how to replicate the register features in the target text as those in the original, properly showing the corresponding field, mode and tenor, thus achieving register equivalence.

3. 国内外研究现状

Along with the development of discourse analysis, register analysis has been developing very fast in recent years. Many people are now working with examples of genuine texts 'in the hope of establishing the linguistic features that characterize them'(Ghadessy 1988, 1993). This is the focus of two recent publications. One of them, for example, Halliday adopts a historical perspective to show how the language of physical science has evolved, i.e. he explains the `prototypical syndrome of features'''''''' that characterizes such a register. And Halliday says, #8220;The notion of register is at once very simple and very powerful.#8221;

Register analysis are widely applied in many other fields, among those, the translation study employs register analysis to be given new research perspective and be expanded. In author''''''''s view, however, in China, this kind of articles are not seen as numerously as many other theories'''''''' application pieces, it means, the width and depth of register analysis should have their more exploration.

The most detailed study of the concept of register and its application to date is by Matthiessen (Ghadessy 1993). He brings the various approaches to register analysis under a `unified theory of register''''''''. Register is used in several applied linguistics in recent years which includes the language of narrative, exposition, history, geography, physical science, religion, news reporting, service encounters, business communication, advertising, classroom interaction, courtroom interaction, gossip, caller-operator interaction and so on.
