1. 研究目的与意义
Humorous language known as particular part of language can bring laughter and amusement to people in jocular and satiric linguistic forms, and vividly reflects human civilization and wisdom with the effect of amusement and enlightenment. The language in sitcoms full of emotional, effective and attitudinal value reflects the native speakers#8217; production of language, which is a good data for linguistic research.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
My paper will give a brief introduction of verbal humor and sitcoms and explore the similarities and differences of humor strategies utilized in Chinese and English sitcoms and to extend people#8217;s understanding of the production mechanism of verbal humors in sitcoms. Then, the paper will probe into the culture differences which contribute to the various humor styles in the world. In aspects of linguistic analysis and cultural roots, the paper is aimed at a comprehensive research on the different humor style in English and Chinese style.
3. 国内外研究现状
Most studies of sitcoms based on pragmatics focus on humor effect produced by the dialogues and conversations of sitcoms. Pragmatic theories, such as relevant- adaptation theory, context theory, Speech Act theory, and cooperative and politeness principles are widely applied to the analysis of sitcom discourse. Compared with studies of sitcoms based on pragmatics, studies of sitcoms in the field of SFL are fewer than those in the field of pragmatics. But as an important research orientation of sitcoms, studies on this field focus on the process from the functional structure and components to the realization of humor effect, especially on how humor effect is produced through texture by various cohesive devices of discourse. Besides the fields of pragmatics and SFL, there exist several researches on Friends from stylistic and translation point of view.

I. Introduction The sitcom, a genre of comedy, including laugh tracks and studio audiences, is composed of recurring characters in common environments such as workplace, home and street. With the prevalence of computers and accelerating globalization of world economy, sitcoms have become a fashionable media that enable cross-cultural researchers and English and Chinese learners to deeply understand the customs and values of both countries which might drive them to reach a profound comprehension of English and Chinese. 1.
