1. 研究目的与意义

'The sun also rises' depicted living and emotional thought of the American youth in Paris, shaping the typical image of the lost generation, so it is called the genre of the declaration. And 'the great Gatsby', published in 1925, revealed befuddled life for 'the Jazz Age' people with social and spiritual appearance, which mercilessly corrupted the American Dream and the illusory human soul. These two works use a large number of symbols,and characters, plot or the language present very subjective imagination. In the process of writing it not only focuses on the characters of emotion, consciousness, thought, activity, attitude description, and directly construct the consciousness of the characters. A comparative analysis of the symbolic significance of the lost generation in the two novels can understand the love and the state of mind of the American people in the 20s.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This thesis is a comparative study of the symbolic meanings of the two novels, #8220;the great Gatsby#8221; and #8220;the sun also rises#8221;, which reflects the similar times and the criticism of the American dream. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first part is to compare the differences of the symbolic meanings of characters in these two works. Secondly, it compares the symbolic meaning of the scene in the novel. Thirdly, the paper compares the symbolic meanings of colors in the two novels, and the artistic characteristics of the novels of the two novels are different, each of which has a high artistic value. These three sections are the main contents of this paper.

3. 国内外研究现状

The Sun Also Rises has cast a long shadow over American literature ever since publication in 1926. In the early stage, the western scholars and critics mainly focused their attention on the relationship between the novel and the 'Lost Generation'. Conrad Aiken, American poet and novelist, said in New York Herald that 'Hemingway was a Spanish aficionado and a bullfight expert... one of the big features was the application of the dialogue.' Hemingway whose works were introduced to China in the 1930s has now become one of the favorite writers among Chinese readers. In 1984, The Sun Also Rises was firstly published by Shanghai Yiwen Club. Like most of Fitzgerald''s works, The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, is considered as a classic work of American literature. However, at first, this work got different reviews and criticisms, most people were not satisf ed with it because it did not match their expectations.There are not many researches on Fitzgerald in China, among which, the research of 'the study of Wu Jianguo' is a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the domestic research on the situation in china. At present, the research on Fitzgerald''s works mainly focuses on the two novels, 'the great Gatsby' and 'the gentle night'.

4. 计划与进度安排

I. Introduction After the first World War, the 'lost generation' appeared. Hemingway is the spokesman of the 'lost generation'. The first important novel of him, 'the sun also rises', is the true representation of the lost generation. 'The great Gatsby' is considered as a symbolic allegory and the author, with its rich imagination and romantic feelings with words, successfully depicts the era of numerous living beings phase with detailed description of the 'wild field jazz age#8221; and the scene of debauchery.' It presents America''s disappointment, the loss of traditional values, the traditional ideal of crisis and the disillusionment of American dream of sorrow for the lost generation. The comparative analysis of the two works can better show the emotional and ideological state of the American people in the 20s. II. Comparison of the Symbols of Characters in the Two Works 1. Conclusion This paper compared the symbolic significance of 'the great Gatsby' and 'the sun also rises', and the comparison of the two outstanding works mined the potential the profound literary artistic value and social criticism value. The two works have created the typical characters in the typical environment, and the image of the characters and the social environment are inseparable. These two works are the treasures of American literature on behalf of the twentieth Century American Literature in high level. The comparison of the two works explore fully the unique artistic value of American literature, but also vividly shows the two novelists of excellent literary creation and outstanding contribution to American literature.
