1. 研究目的与意义

Humor, for human beings, can add spice to our daily life. What''''s more, it is a necessary part of speech. It not only plays a vital role in the improvement of the interpersonal relationships, but also becomes the symbol of one''''s upbringing,wisdom and glamour. Humor has always been the research focus of many scholars in different fields. With the rapid development of linguistics, pragmatics offers a new perspective to humor studies.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Based on the seven main-stream pragmatic theories, this thesis makes a comprehensive research on the verbal humor occurring in English conversations. Through the analysis of a great many examples of English humor within the framework of pragmatic theories formed by cooperative principle, politeness principle and so on, this thesis is much devoted to the exploration of the pragmatic apparatuses for humor production and interpretation.

This thesis is composed of six parts. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction of humor,containing the definition of humor, the classification of humor, the significance of the present research , as well as the framework of the whole thesis. Chapter 2 presents the previous researches on humor, done from traditional theories and modern linguistic theories. Chapter 3 serves to be the key of this thesis. It provides the pragmatic apparatuses for humor production and interpretation through a large number of examples. Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of pragmatic functions of humor. Chapter 5 discusses two practical application of the humor: pedagogical and communicative. Chapter 6 makes a summary of the major findings of this thesis and offers some limitations and suggestions for future research.

3. 国内外研究现状

The researches made on the humorous language from the perspective of pragmatics are relatively limited in sum. Also, the majority of them just apply one of pragmatic theories to the humor studies.
