1. 研究目的与意义
With the process of globalization and the development of the Internet, foreign films and television programs have been introduced to China and enjoy great popularity. Film subtitles translation as an intercultural communication activity, is that not only a conversion between different symbols of language, but also the understanding of foreign culture connotation. However, as a new branch of translation, film subtitling translation is still in its stage of exploration, and its practice has not obtained a systematic and theoretical guidance. Translation of film subtitles must let the audience understand the story better by subtitles when they are watching the performance. Eugene A. Nida#8217;s Functional Equivalence Theory, one of the most important translation theories, has been widely adopted by many translators since it was born. It is aimed that the translator should produce the same effect on his target readers as the source language author produced on the original readers. This article attempts to analyze the subtitle translation on functional equivalence theory, which is the criterion of film translation.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
In this thesis, the author will try to analyze English-Chinese subtitle translation of movies, setting Flipped as an example, through Nida#8217;s functional equivalence as a theoretical foundation, and seek strategies to achieve equivalent effect from the three aspects: lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and stylistic equivalence.The author will first introduce the definition of subtitle and its function, and the features of subtitle translation. Meanwhile, detailed substance of Nida#8217;s functional equivalence will be given for readers to have a better understanding about this theory. Then the author puts the emphasis on the feasibility and necessity of application of Nida#8217;s functional equivalence theory to the subtitle translation. Finally, the author will take the film Flipped as a case to analyze how functional equivalence theory guides subtitle translation and what strategies have been employed to achieve functional equivalence effect. 3. 国内外研究现状
As subtitle translation becomes more and more important, there are a lot of studies on subtitle translation since last few decades.Professor Li Yunxing stated that #8216;the primary requirement of subtitles is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, the most relevant information in the most effective way#8217; in his Strategies for Subtitles Translation. He analyzed the features of subtitles in terms of time-space constraints, informative function and cultural factors. In order to get an effective result, he pointed out some strategies for subtitle translation such as deduction strategy, which includes condensation, reductive paraphrasing and deletion. While for the cultural words in subtitles, he put forward five modes. They are literal translation or transliteration, omitting, paraphrasing, integrating, and domestication. At last, he combined these strategies into #8216;deduction, simplicity, and directness#8217; with the principles of relevance. Professor Qian Shaochang insisted that #8216;more attention should be paid in audiovisual translation#8217; in his Film Translation-a Field of Growing Importance in Translation. He describes five characteristics of film languages which are audio, integrated, instantaneous, informal, and without commentary. He then pointed out #8216;the difficulties of translation in two cases: the huge culture difference, and the use of puns and wording.#8217; Professor ZhaoChunmei has done a lot of researches on film translation. In Translation into Chinese of Film Scripts and Scripts of TV drama series #8211; Four Main Conflicting Demands, she wrote four conflicting demands in film translation-- length of translation and the original content; word order and the sequence of moving pictures; domestication and foreignization method.

January 10, 2022--January 25, 2022, collect material;January 26, 2022--March 10, 2022 , make the first draft; March 21, 2022--March 31, 2022, collect more material and alter the body paragraph;April 11, 2022--April 25, 2022, shape the second draft; May 5 , 2022--May 15, 2022, do some modification and finalize the manuscript.
