1. 研究目的与意义
Mark Twain is the founder of the American critical realism literature. He was regarded as the #8220;greatest American humorist of his age#8221;, and William Faulkner called Twain #8220;the father of American literature#8221;. His works are featured as extremely exaggerate, humor and comical. One of his famous work, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was often called the #8220;great American Novel#8221;. He said that was his favorite novel he has created. Hemingway also wrote in the essay: All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. The book depicts the protagonist Huck and a slave Jim escapes from the civilized world to pursue the freedom. Huck represents the author#8217;s free and equal democratic ideals. The book also depicts multi-aspect social lives before the American Civil War, and creates many characters. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is written in American vernacular language, initiated the tradition of the American literature vernacular style. Also, this novel criticized the racial discrimination, and expressed the yearning towards democratic and free life in a real sense.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Huck, a thirteen or fourteen boy, who cannot bear the civilized world and his father#8217;s abuse, decided to pursue the freedom. At the same time, a slave Jim also escaped to pursue the freedom because he was afraid of being sold him down to Orleans. Both Huck and Jim are escaping to pursue the freedom, but the freedom they pursue is different. Huck is reluctant to live under so many rules with the widow Douglas who took him for her son. In addition, his father always hit him and locks him in the home. Therefore, he escaped. He wants to live without the constraint. Jim is a slave, so he doesn''t have personal freedom. He must obey his master#8217;s order. The whole thing including his mind is belong to his owner. He escaped not only for the personal freedom but also for the freedom of spirit. I am going to research three aspects about the pursuit of freedom in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The first aspect is that the pursuit of freedom of Huckleberry and Jim. The second aspect is that the symbols of freedom in the Adventures of Huckleberry. The third aspect is that the whites#8217; attitudes to the slaves#8217; freedom.
There are some questions I will figure out.
The reasons why Huck and Jim want to escape?
3. 国内外研究现状
There are three theses of the freedom in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by many scholars which are expound on Jim, Huckleberry and Tom Sawyer#8217;s freedom.
The first thesis of the freedom is based on the following paragraphs.
Connie Dee Durrance deems that Jim is a hero rather than Huckleberry Finn of Twain#8217;s novel. Jim#8217;s escape and expected freedom represent the central theme of the novel. Jim#8217;s moral honesty and sacrifice symbolizes the struggles and dreams of the common American slave. Under then circumstances, the punishment for escape was left totally to the decision of the master. According to eighteenth and nineteenth century laws, not only was the escape dangerous, the possibility for permanent freedom for the runaway was slim. In many of Mark Twain#8217;s works, one#8217;s journey to freedom became a central theme. Jim who fights for freedom was greater than love for life. Jim is a hero because he has the willingness to sacrifice his own life for another, the moral courage and honesty to live outside his own profits, and the determination to pursue the freedom.
