1. 研究目的与意义

Nowadays, with the rapid advance of China's reform and opening up policy and the irreversibility of the trend of globalization, the Chinese people are more and more deeply aware of the importance of learning a foreign language to improve their own future and the country's economic development. In order to meet the people's desire for learning a foreign language and the requirement of the country’s comprehensive development, the research on language theory has made fruitful progress, and the wave of reform in foreign language teaching has been constantly swept forward.

However, there still exists a strange phenomenon in the process of teaching and learning English in China, that is, many people are not capable of learning English effectively. For example, a large number of English major students, who have studied English for more than ten years, are still unable to use English fluently and freely in their writing and oral expression. Obviously, it demonstrates that there exist some problems in English teaching in China.

Using the theory of second language acquisition to guide the process of English teaching and learning is of great significance for improving the teaching methods and improving the quality of English teaching. Among the various theoretical models, Krashen's research on second language acquisition has attracted extensive attention from linguists. Although the domestic and foreign academic circles pass different judgments to his theory, “it is maybe the most all-sided and acceptable theory nowadays.”

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This paper intends to systematically elaborate and analyze the theories closely related to English teaching in the study of second language acquisition and it aims to further study its practical significance in English teaching in China from the perspectiveof Krashen's second language acquisition theory as well.

The essay is divided into four parts. Chapter 1 is mainly about the introduction of the thesis: Making distinctions between several pairs of basic concepts; the current situation about the second language acquisition research at home and abroad; the intentions of studying the second language acquisition. Chapter 2 isabout the maintheories of second language acquisition and its significance to foreign language teaching. Chapter 3 is the major part of the paper. It elaborates the Krashen’s second language acquisition theory and its enlightenment to English teaching. His theory includes the Acquisition-Learning Division; The Input Hypothesis; The Monitor Hypothesis; The Natural Order Hypothesis and the Affective Filter Hypothesis. The Chapter 4 is the conclusion: Elaborate the relationship between there 5 hypotheses and the evaluation to Krashen’s second language acquisition.

3. 国内外研究现状

Second language acquisition theory is a systematic elaboration of the rules and conditions of second language acquisition. It mainly studies the behavioral characteristics and cognitive psychological processes of second language learners. At the beginning, the target of the study of second language acquisition is language acquisition under natural conditions. Later, a large number of studies have emerged focusing on language acquisition in classroom settings. This kind of research opens up a new field for the study of second language acquisition.

Foreign researches on second language acquisition have made remarkable achievements. For instance, R. Ellis (1994) listed more than 1,600 documents related to the study of second language acquisition in his book The Study of Second Language Acquisition which is considered as a milestone. This shows the maturity and development of the field of second language acquisition. At the same time, R. Ellis (1997) made a good summary of the background of the study of second language acquisition in his book Second Language Acquisition. That is, second language acquisition did not happen by accident, it appeared in the 'global village' and 'Internet' era, and the communication between human beings was beyond the scope of local communities. Learning a foreign language is no longer a pastime, but a means to obtain educational opportunities and employment opportunities. Among the numerous theories, the research of Stephen D. Krashen (1982) has attracted a lot of linguists' attention. His theory of second language acquisition consists of five hypotheses, and Ellis (1985) evaluated it as “ it is maybe the most all-sided and acceptable theory nowadays.” In addition, the main theories of second language acquisition include Interlanguage Theory proposed by linguist L.Selinker (1972) and Linguistics Universals proposed by linguist N.Chomsky (1965). The former believed that in the process of learning a second language, learners tend to use a transitional language that neither has connection with the native language nor with the target language before they fully grasp the target language. The latter intended to explain second language acquisition by using the rules of universality and particularity of language and elaborated how the characteristics of the target language and the learner''''s first language affect the language development process.

Domestic research in this area is still in the stage of introduction and recommendation, but there is no lack of empirical research and theoretical discussion. For example, Li[李莉](1997) published a paper called A Review of Krashen''''s Second Language Acquisition Theory in the Journal of Zhengzhou University and Jing [荆增林](1991)published a paper named Objections to Krashen’s theory of acquisition and learning in the Journal of Modern Foreign Languages. Due to the importance of second language acquisition research, China’s foreign language education circle has also paid great attention to it. For example, Zhang[张沪平] (1999) published a paper On the Role of Language Input in Outline Design and Textbook Compilation in the Journal of English Teaching and Research in Primary and Secondary Schools. Besides, Duan[段宇](2002)published the paper The Second Language Acquisition Theory and Its Enlightenment to Foreign Language Beginners in the journal of Zhengzhou University. What’s more, in the journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology, Huang[黄洪](2005)published a paper The enlightenment of Krashen’s Affective Filtering Hypothesis on Foreign Language Teaching in China.
