1. 研究目的与意义
William Blake is a famous poet, painter and sculptor at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. His poems show a poetic style which is completely different from that of the times he lived, breaking the shackles of the classical doctrines in 18th century poetry creation, showing strong feelings of love and hate. His poetry style is fresh and bold, the language is vivid, the themes are close to the real life(白凤欣amp;佘平,2010).He is one of the most complex and personal poets in English literature. And his poems are full of mysterious illusions, reflecting the serious problems of the real society, and also showing the beautiful state of the ideal society.
Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience have long been considered to reflect the opposite states of human soul(Blake,1992). Songs of Innocence is a companion piece to Songs of Experience, and they are unity of opposites(李筱,2008). They are the most famous poetry of William Blake, which include most of his poems. The former shows a world of love, kindness, compassion and joy, while the latter exposes the darkness of society, which arouses the research interests of both domestic and foreign scholars(应宜文,2014). There has been a saying that “For devoted poetry readers there are two William Blakes. There is sweet William, and there is mad(Daniel,1994).” Blake’s works are so complex and non-conformist in its essence in regards to the ideology of the time, therefore, they are frequently belittled and misunderstood by their contemporaries (Beer, 2005). However, they are always “rediscovered” by later critics and the literary world. Thus, Blake as a person with a very peculiar and unique philosophy uncommon to his time was not only an important poet in the past but also a very powerful poet for the modern time. The complexity, broadness of themes and the universal questions he raised have a great effect on modern thoughts and the modern audience (Clarke, 1929).Various types of symbolism and topicality of his poetry have resulted in an ever-lasting discussions and novel interpretations of his poems.
In order to get a better understanding of William Blake’s poets and to explore the differences between them, this paper makes a detailed and in-depth analysis of Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience with the method of comparative study, exploring the content structure, the language style, the rhetorical devices, the themes and other poetic devices of the poems.
