Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre is one of the best English novels of the nineteenth century, which has a prominent place in the history of English literature. It has aroused great popularity since publication. It is also a representative work of feminist literature. Bronte have laid a profound foundation for the creative writing of the world and exerted a great influence on the development of world literature.

Jane Eyre received widespread attention in the academic circles. Researchers have heated discussions from different perspectives such as feminist perspective, hermeneutics perspective, psychological perspective and so on. In recent years, some researchers payed attention to the image of madwoman in Jane Eyre and researched from feminist, post-colonial theory, love and marriage perspective, etc. These researches provided us with new insights into reading Jane Eyre. However, some of researches are piecemeal, unsystematic and inadequate, and most of them ignored the disability issue of the madwoman in this novel. Therefore, this study will interpret the madwoman narratives in Jane Eyre within the social context, exploring the complicated relationship between the madwoman and patriarchal society as well as metaphor of disease. Through the irrational and abnormal raving behaviors of the madwoman, this thesis will try to reveal and find the support point to resist mental illness, so as to deeply discuss disability issues and their practical significance.

Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre was welcomed by people all over the world and was given good praise by experts. Thackeray called it “the masterpiece of a great genius”. Eugene Ofsade said Jane Eyre“has a vibrant personality”. Jane Eyre has received a lot of attention from the academia, and there are lot of articles, books, theses and dissertations about this novel.

From the Perspective of Feminism

From the feminist perspective Angela Andersson (2011) interpreted this novel and resisted male dominance and pursue identity and independence.She thought the theme is female independence in this novel. In his article Marriage in Jane Eyre: from Contract to Conversation, James Phillips (2008) wrote Jane and Rochester get married with equality, reinventing marriage as the social form of such freedom.He held the view that this novel can provide insight into equality in marriage.He further told equality and independence are also inportant in marriage.
