1. 研究目的与意义

Since the 21st century, human science and technology has made a great and rapid development. Meanwhile, the acceleration of economic globalization process has made cross-cultural communication more frequent. Thus, a better understanding of people between different cultures is of great importance. However, because of different cultural backgrounds, ways of thinking, customs and lifestyles, pragmatic failures often occur in every aspect of cross-cultural communication, which can cause misunderstandings even conflicts between each other. Pragmatic failure, as the name implies, means that the speaker violates the principle of appropriateness and leads to the misunderstanding of the listener. Therefore, in order to make the communication successful, we should find out the causes of those failures and the solutions to them. This paper will focus on pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication and put forward countermeasures for them. It aims to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings effectively and improve the cross-cultural communicative ability of communicators.

3. 国内外研究现状

Researches on the reasons and countermeasures for pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication have special meaning and value for contemporary linguistic studies. Therefore, domestic and foreign scholars have done many researches from different angles. In foreign countries, the research on pragmatic failure started from Jenny Thomas (1983), a famous British pragmatist who published an article called Cross-cultural Pragmatic Failure, which defined and classified pragmatic failures and established a theoretical framework to analyze them. Later, many foreign scholars put forward pragmatic principles. P. Grice (1975) wrote an article named Logic and Conversation. He thought that people use relevant sentences instead of incoherent sentences during the communication because both the speaker and the listener follow the cooperative principle. Besides, G. Leech (1983) came up with a set of politeness rules for all the social groups, such as tact maxim, generosity maxim and agreement maxim, which were contained in his book, Principles of Pragmatics. In China, the research on pragmatic failure started from He Ziran (1988), who made investigations on pragmatic differences between English and Chinese according to Thomas#8217; view and also made a lot of explanations on the concept of pragmatic failure in his book, A Survey of Pragmatics. He Zhaoxiong (2000) narrowed down the content of the research on cross-cultural pragmatics to three points, including cross-cultural pragma-linguistics, cross-cultural socio-linguistics and inter-language pragmatics. He said that cross-cultural pragmatics means doing comparative researches on language activities between people of different cultural backgrounds. All his views were summarized in the book, A New Introduction to Pragmatics. Furthermore, Zhang Yanqun (2002) discussed the influence of values on cross-cultural communication in an article called Reasons for Pragmatic Failures in Cross-cultural Communication. In the future, more and more researches will be done to promote the development of cross-cultural pragmatics.
