1. 研究目的与意义

Women are traditionally regarded as male#8217;s appendages in male dominated society, and they have played a dominant and enslaved role in male society. In many literary works, women'''' fate is tragic, but there are also women who are against this injustice. Female consciousness is the core of Western feminist literary criticism theory. Therefore, it is of great significance to use feminist literary criticism theory to study female consciousness works. The study of female consciousness in the creation of western female writers began with the birth of feminist literary criticism theory. Criticism means the pure sense of literary criticism, through the study of literary texts in detail, revealing the contents of gender discrimination and female consciousness among them; another meaning is social criticism meaning, namely through the study of literary texts, criticism of social inequality between men and women reality. Feminist literary criticism treats these writing as a subversive, resists to the old culture and sexual political order. It can be said that without feminist literary criticism as a means of literary criticism, the establishment of women'''' consciousness cannot be discussed in the creation of female writers. William Makepeace Thackeray is one of the most important writers of the English critical realism in 19 century. In the money-fevered era, Thackeray criticized the whole bourgeois and aristocratic society by indicting his famous novel Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair is Thackeray#8217;s masterpiece, which is also a marvelous work in British Literature. In this novel, the female images are endowed with vivid personalities, especially the two main characters Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. It is acknowledged that the females in Vanity Fair each have a dual character---viciousness and virtuousness. For instance, Rebecca Sharp is dehumanized from the perspective of her tucking into the upper class at all costs, but from the angle of view that her endeavor to achieve a better life, Rebecca deserves compliment. Therefore, the female images are essential to comprehend the implicit criticism of an unfair reality. Furthermore, the females are the outcome and victim of the vanity fair. It is the female attachment to male that uniquely pushes forward the plot development, interprets the psychology of characters and molds distinctive personalities.
