The Scarlet Letter is one of the American writer Hawthorne#8217;s famous novels in the 19th century. It is not only the representative work of the American romantic novels, but also known as the create piece of American psychological analysis novel. In this paper, the author describes the main characters of their life course and tells the story of a love tragedy happened in colonial North America. The novel describes vividly about the social oppression of Hester, but Hester was not succumbed to religious morality which suppresses the human nature. She posed challenges to the ignorant tradition bravely and she proved that the existence of herself. This also established herself image and showed her great feminist thoughts. Hester is a brave representative who revolts against the unreasonable marriage system and longs for really good love. But the purpose of Hawthorne to create this work is not only to praise the woman''''s renovation, and at the same time his put his Puritan humanism perfusion on description of Hester#8217;s image. The Scarlet Letter also profoundly embodies Hawthorne#8217;s puritanism and confusion. This article attempts through the analysis of the characteristics of the female protagonist in the novel and explores the author''''s feminist ideas.

This paper focuses on the image features of Hester in The Scarlet Letter s and analyses implicit feminist thoughts. The first part mainly introduces the definition and development of feminism. The second part analyses the causes of author''''s feminist thoughts from his background knowledge. Finally it focuses how the feminist ideas embodied in the text. Such as the heroine of the rebellion and pursuit.. This article is mainly discuss Hawthorne#8217;s feminist consciousness appears in The Scarlet Letter according to some theory and method of feminist literary criticism to. In Hawthorne''''s view, the general understanding of women includes three aspects: the marginal status of women, women''''s personality and feminine weakness. His understanding has been accompanied by the development of the plot of The Scarlet Letter. It is of great significance for us to describe the feminism in The Scarlet Letter. On the one hand, it reconstructs the social equality and provides a way for people who are the center of the patriarchal ideology. On the other hand, it guides the modern people to establish the correct view of the sex.

Hawthorne is a great American romantic novelist in the 19 century. His greatest work is The Scarlet Letter. Since its advent, it has never been interrupted to receive comments on from home and abroad. These researches were mainly investigated from his art creation, subject content and research structure and so on.

The study on The Scarlet Letter in China generally shows diversified characteristics. In China, there are a lot of scholars has made the deep researches on The Scarlet Letter. Some scholars analyzed its ideological theme from the social background perspective. Some scholars analyzed symbolism in this work and some scholars analyzed the feminist ideas which embodies in the work. Such as Meng Dong-mei, who from the perspective of ecological feminism explored the closely relationship between women and nature. And Wu Shu-yan, who analyzed woman#8217;s double oppression of society and accused the patriarchal social and religious society#8217;s persecution to human nature. All these have greatly enriched the understanding of The Scarlet Letter. Let the many readers benefit from it a lot.

The Scarlet Letter has recognized by the United States as the first literary which win the reputation of the world. There are also many scholars have conducted deeply studies on The Scarlet Letter abroad. Like, love, story, law, from the scarlet letter by Nili Cohen, who revealed the complex relationship about the characters and the freedom and pursuit embodied in the works. And Jon Dietrick, he studied the work from the perspective of symbolism. With more and more people have explored The Scarlet Letter, there will be more people added to the reading and studying of the novel.
