Political speech, a powerful weapon of argument for politicians, is a common political discourse. In domestic and international affairs, political speech clearly delivers political views and ideas. It plays an essential role in political life.

In political speeches, politicians use a huge number of conceptual metaphors to explain their political views and make their speeches more convincing. Conceptual metaphors in political speech play an important role the in study of language. This paper clarifies the definition, categories and features of conceptual metaphor. In addition, through the analysis of the conceptual metaphors in political speeches, the functions of these metaphors are studied and listed.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This paper will give the introduction of political speeches and conceptual metaphors. Then make an analysis of conceptual metaphors in political speeches. By analyzing these political speeches, the concept metaphor in the speech is clarified and the functions of the conceptual metaphor in the political speech are expounded.

This paper mainly deals with four research questions through the analysis of politician#8217;s speeches; first, what is political speech? Second, what is conceptual metaphor? Third, what are the primary conceptual metaphors in politician#8217;s speeches? The last one is what the functions of conceptual metaphor are in political speeches. The significance of this study is to make it clear that what functions of conceptual metaphors have in political speeches.

3. 国内外研究现状

Metaphor has been the focus of linguistic study for a long time. The origin of metaphor can be traced back to Aristotle period. The two well-known books The poetics and The Rhetoric of Aristotle represent the start of complete systematic study on metaphor, in which he states that #8220;metaphor are pleasing words that make us learn something#8221;, #8220;a command of metaphor is the mark of genius#8221; (Aristotle,1458:22 in Cameron amp;Low,2001:72). Richard is considered to be the pioneer that illustrates the cognitive nature of metaphor systematically and explicitly. In 1930s, he published The Philosophy of Rhetoric, in which he emphasized that #8220;thought is metaphorical#8221;, #8220;we cannot get through three sentences of ordinary fluid discourse without metaphor#8221; (Richard, 1936:94). In 1980s, with the publication of Metaphor We Live By, the study of metaphor turned to a new stage, shifting away from the ornamental function of metaphor. Since late 1970s, metaphor research has been promoted by European and American scholars (Or tony, 1979; Cooper, 1986; Kittay, 1987; Lakoff amp;Turner, 1989) and metaphor has been studied from different perspectives by linguists around the world. Recently, Lakoff has carried out researches on American political metaphors, such as terrorism metaphor, metaphors of war, metaphors in foreign affairs (Lakoff, 2001, 2003, 2004). But despite Lakoff#8217;s effort in the study of metaphor in political discourse, little systematic study on metaphors in political discourse can be found.

Compared with western countries, the study of metaphor from the cognitive aspect in China is a little late. It is not until 1994, Chinese linguist Zhao Yanfang firstly published an article about metaphor cognition. In 1995, Zhao Yanfang first introduced Lakoff and Johnson#8217;s revolutionary work Metaphor We Live By to China. Since then metaphor study has become popular in China. From - 1995 to 2001, 472 articles analyzing metaphor have been published in CNKI; and from 2002 to 2008, the number of articles has been dramatically increased to 4415. But among these articles, there is still little systematic study on metaphors in political discourse.
