1. 研究目的与意义

First of all, Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are great English writers in female literature. Jane Austen inherited and developed good traditions of realism at the 18th century and promoted the popularity of realism novels at the 19th century. Charlotte Bronte laid solid foundations on the develooment of female literature which aimed to solve the problems women faced at the 20th century. They have had a deep impact on the history of English literature.

Secondly, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre are masterpieces of literature. Pride and Prejudice vividly shows the lifestyle and personality of people in the conservative and backwordcountryside at the end of 18th century. It is regarded as one of the ten greatest novels in the worid by Maugham, novelist and playwright. Jane Eyre, because of its unique poetic lyrical dialogue, gains many good comments, and many people still read it and get inspiration from the main character.

Thirdly, from my point of view, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre are both female writers'' works, and their main content is connected with the development, such as marriage and life, of the women.To make compairson, we can not only improve our appreciation of literature, but also learn the female consiciousness from the character.

3. 国内外研究现状

Many authors agree that the similarity in the personality of Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Eyre is that they both show one aspect of female consciousness--to be independent.For example, Zhu Lili says #8220;both of Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Eyre are equipped with rebellious spririt and desire to be equal with men.#8221; Gao Dexin notes they are both #8220;self-respect and self-esteem#8221; and #8220;dare to defy power#8221;. A different ideal about the similarity in their personnality illustrated by Chen Xing is that #8220;characters'' living and emotional experiences are influenced by the author's.#8221; As for the difference in Jane and Elizabeth's personality, many researchers hold the opinion that the representation of female consciousness is much more obvious in Jane than that in Elizabeth.For instance,Wang Yaoming points out that #8220;They pursue female independence and the equality between women and men to different degrees.#8221;, and #8220;Elizabeth wants to gain the respect from men, but Jane dares to pursue the complete equality and independence.#8220; Besides, Zhu Lili's article reveals #8220;Compared with Jane Eyre, Elizabeth Bennet still has some limitations in her female consciousness.#8221;

In terms of Elizabeth and Jane's attitudes towards love, many writers considered that they have the same recognization of marriage--Love is important in marriage, and property or money isn't the main factor of marrying others. As mentioned in Zhao Jie's article, #8220;they both despise the marriage without love and refuse the combination of money.#8221; Also, Quan Lihong shows #8220;they hold the same idea of marriage that the foundation of real happy marriage is love.#8220; Then, concrening the difference in their views of marriage, some authors think Elizabeth's choice of marriage, to some degree, affected by money, while Jane pursuit the equality of marriage. Take Zhu Lili's paper for example, #8220;Jane feels drawn to Rochester because he gives her equality and warm feelings#8220;, while Elizabeth #8220;takes Darcy's wealth into consideration when she accepts his love, and thinks aceepting his financial aid is a natural and reasonable thing.#8221; Other authors consider their ways to pursuit love are different. In Ma Xueling''s article, #8220;Elizabeth waits for male''s pursuit of love, while Jane is active to pursuit love.#8221;

Then when it comes to Elizabeth and Jane''s living backgroud, researchers have the same opinion that Elizabeth was born in a middle-class family, while Jane lives at the bottom of the society, but both of them get education.Just as mentioned in Quan Lihong''s article, #8220;Elizabeth reads a lot of books#8220; , and #8220;her parents gives her a shelter to protcet herself.#8221; However, #8220;Jane is an orphan who was born in a poor family#8221; and #8220; was sent to a boarding school by her aunt.#8221; Some writers analyse reasons for the difference between Eliazabeth andJane mentioned above, and they think that the most importantreason is that Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte live in differenct ages. For example, Wang Yaoming says#8221; Austen lived from the end of 18th century to the beginning of 19th century.#8221; and at that time, #8220;Men played a important role in the society of mainstream, and women relied on them without respecrt or social status.#8221; While, #8220;Charlotte was born later than Austen for almost half a century#8221;and, at that time.#8221;Charitism focused on the status of women and advocated the liberty of the female, which awaken the female consciousness ofwomen.#8221;
