F. Scott Fitzgerald was the most representative American novelist of the 1920s, and The Great Gatsby was the masterpiece of him. This novel shows a way of getting close to a vivid picture of American society in 1920s. Research on the tragic ending of this novel has become a hot topic since its republication, but analysis from a single perspective does not really made you understand the reasons for the tragic ending of the book, also, you can''t understand the author''s true intention from a single perspective. This paper is going to analyze the causes of the tragic ending of this novel from many aspects.

This paper mainly analyzes the causes of the tragic ending of The Great Gatsby from four aspects. First, degenerate American dream. Through the process of the accumulation of wealth in Gatsby to reveal a degenerate American dream pursued by many in that era. Second, the class relations existing in American society in the Jazz Age. Focusing on the contradictions of the lower classes represented by Gatsby, the upper class represented by Tom. Third, Gatsby#8217;s idealist view of love. Last, dream distorted by wrong money concept. He regards money as a means of realizing his dream.
