3. 国内外研究现状

The term #8220;euphemism#8221; was coined by a British writer, George Blunt, in the early 1850s. After that, many western scholars, such as Mencken, Hugh Rawson, contributed many studies of euphemism. For example, Hugh Rawson compiled A Dictionary of Euphemism and Other Double-talk, which provided a detailed explanation of euphemism. In 1991, Allan and Burridge wrote Euphemism and Dysphemism, in which he studied English euphemism from a pragmatic point. Anne Bertram emphasized the features of euphemism in his dictionary. The Sociolinguistics of Language was published by R. Fashold which revealed the historical and social background of the euphemism. And English euphemism has also aroused the interest of Chinese linguists and scholars. Cheng Wangdao studied euphemism from the view of rhetorics and indicated that euphemism appeared in sentences and discourses. During the 1970s and 1980s, Chinese scholars began to study euphemism from social functions after foreign sociolinguistic theories were introduced. In 1983, Chen Yuan wrote Sociolinguistic, in which he discussed the historical and social background of euphemism, and revealed the nature of this social phenomenon. Liu Chunbao collected a large quantity of English euphemism from different fields and concluded the original and the euphemistic meaning of the words. All these scholars made great contributions to English euphemism, yet there are still aspects which need to be studied.
