1. 研究目的与意义

In 1967 Herbert Paul Grice first proposed the idea of the 'Cooperative Principle'. He claimed that during a conversation both parties should stick to a series of principles in order to achieve a successful communication. Standing within the framework of the corporation principle, this paper which uses #8220;The Big Bang Theory#8221; as a corpus, analyzes the humor generated in the cognitive process of searching for relevance. According to the relevance theory, the understanding of humor is a process in which the listener finds 'relevance' in what seems 'irrelevant', hoping that this analysis can help more people to understand and appreciate the humor in #8220;The Big Bang Theory#8221;.Meanwhile their individual sense of humor can also be improved.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Conversational implicature is due to the fact that in real communication people do not strictly abide the principles of cooperation and related guidelines for various reasons. Grice argues, that there is a tacit agreement between the speaker and the listener that in order to achieve a particular goal in all language communication both parties should follow the principle, which is the cooperative principle of conversation. In other words, the words each participant says, need to be consistent with the purpose of the conversation.

Humor, as a common form of verbal communication, is an important part of all cultures and languages. In verbal communication, to ensure the progress of the conversation is going smoothly, both participants must abide the principle of cooperation collaboratively; However, people often violate the cooperative principle for some reason. From the perspective of pragmatics and examples of English humor, this paper explores the humorous effects when the speaker violates the principle of cooperation in conversations, which will help us to understand and master the language better, and improves the ability to appreciate and use language.

3. 国内外研究现状

Abroad

Researches of the humorous effects of against the cooperation principle are relatively few abroad because the definition of humor is different all over the world. The topic among the most important researchers was on the basis of cooperation principle, Grice(1975) who put the dialogue in the classification of four maximum for study. In addition, he classified into categories of quantity, quality relation and manner.

Among the most important researches on the topic were Understanding Humor Based on the Incongruity Theory and the Cooperative Principle (2012)written by Lily Zhan. In her book, Humor plays a crucial role in social interactions, sometimes it is even named as social coping mechanism. People have been working on humor since Plato and Aristotle times and different theories have thus come into being, among which the incongruity theory is considered most influential. Her article combines the incongruity theory and a pragmatic principle - the Cooperative Principle (CP) set by H. P. Grice, to explain how humor is generated and perceived in certain context. The analysis shows that people produce humor not just for humor#8217;s sake. Mostly, they want to express an additional message or implicature in Grice#8217;s term. Following Grice#8217;s particularized conversational implicatures generated when conversational maxims of the CP are flouted by participants to convey extra information, the paper terms humor out of exploiting maxims as particularized conversational humor. Detailed analyses of examples of humor have been conducted to elucidate how humor is generated through flouting conversational maxims of the CP and what implicature is put across.Of all the principle mentioned by her playing an important role in daily communication.
