1. 研究目的与意义

With the trend of globalization, cultural communication is inevitable and essential, but there exist some differences among various cultures. Since literary works are the carrier of a nation’s culture, cultural differences can be discussed through the understanding of literary works and characters of the works.

Lin Tai-yu and Jane Eyre are two typical female characters in Chinese and Western literary works. There are some similarities between them to establish the comparability. For example, their families’ backgrounds are similar——both of them are orphaned girls; and they are both considered as rebels of the time. At the same time, differences in their personalities can be explored by us, which are formed under the influence of different cultural environments with the mapping of Chinese and Western culture for comparison.

Research contents:

Lin Tai-yu and Jane Eyre are two classic female images in Chinese and Western literature respectively, from which we can learn and summarize the differences between them. From the aspect of cultural dimension, we can deeply know the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.

3. 国内外研究现状

The thesis of this paper is An Analysis of Cultural Differences between China and the West Based on the Cultural Dimensions——Take Lin Tai-yu and Jane Eyre as an Example. I will divide all the literature and materials in accordance with the differences of the two images and the cultural differences hidden behind the personality of two characters.

Liu Qiufang and Zhang Wanxi writes that the different social systems and education made them have different personalities. “Restricted by feudal education, Tai-yu was more reserved in her feelings. She didn''t even express her determination to her parents not to get married.”(Dang Lanling, 2011) However, Jane Eyre''s pursuit of love was more persistent, more passionate and more direct than Tai-yu. Thus it can be seen that the feudal society with distinct hierarchy made Tai-yu''s personality more restrained. (Cheng Bingqian, 2016)However, influenced by the social consciousness at that time, Jane Eyre''s independence consciousness has become increasingly mature.
