3. 国内外研究现状
The word ' Taboo'can date back to 1777. An English man, named James Cook, found a strange phenomenon on Tonga Island of the southern Pacific Ocean: some words are notallowed to be used, which belong to the scope of 'tabu' ,meaning#8220;divine#8221; and #8220;untouchable#8221; by the local people. Cook introduced 'tabu' into English and it became 'taboo'. As a special and important part of culture and language, taboo has already attracted people's attention for a long time, thus researches about it has been carried out by lots of scholars in various fields all around the world. The contributions to taboo in early time were relevant to anthropology, sociology and psychology. Among the most important researches on the topic were Totem and Taboo (1913) by Sigmund Freud, who provides the most ingenious explanation for the apparently irrational nature of taboo, postulating that they are generated by emotional ambivalence and in effect represent forbidden actions for which there nevertheless exists a strong unconscious inclination. And Franz Baermann Steiner 's Taboo, Truth and Religion (1967) does the most comprehensive work by providing the full history of the origin of the word taboo, its cognates and meanings in Polynesia, its significance and functions in Polynesian religion, and its relationship to anthropological and psychological theories.
In China, this topic is more strictly forbidden due to the deep influence of feudalist ideology. Studies in this area are maybe later and fewer than those in the West. Chen Yuan#8217;s Sociolinguistics (1982), a pioneer monograph of this kind, is the earliest literature that provides a comprehensive analysis of linguistic taboo. Qu Yanbin''s Chinese Folk Linguistics (1992) discusses taboo in Chinese from the point of the view of folklore. Due to its starting late and relatively small number of domestic study from the perspective of intercultural communicaiton, the study and research on linguistic taboos still needs to be further strengthened and expanded.
