1. 研究目的与意义
As one of the greatest war novelists in contemporary literature, Ernest Miller Hemingway wrote many stories about wars which were mostly inspired by his own experiences of war. His works set against the background of two World Wars and the Spanish Civil War not only show the processes of protagonists#8217; war sentiments turning from being confused, pessimistic and war-weary to being actively devoted to criticizing wars, but also portray vividly his own psychological transformation. What makes Hemingway outstanding is that he revealed the essence of war --social disasters. Thus, his works have an eternal charm, in other words, they are timeless. Therefore, it has profound realistic significance to analyze Hemingway#8217;s works on wars, the representative of which is A Farewell to Arms.
What distinguishes Hemingway#8217;s works from other literature on wars is that he goes straight to the essence of war------the most massive, most ferocious and worst commanded massacre. He tells people that the only way to remove a war is to fight with the enemies who started this war until you beat them and to make efforts to end up all these wars. Today, after a half of century, when we review his works, we increasingly realize that for whatever reason, war brings people nothing but pain and suffering. Therefore, Hemingway#8217;s works are as popular as they have ever been regardless of in the past, at present or in future. Proved by facts, he is not only a great writer, but also a wise man, a real hero who declared against the injustice of war. This attitude is shown more obviously in A Farewell to Arms.
A Farewell to Arms is a novel set during the Italian campaign of World War I. The book, published in 1929, is a first-person account of Frederic Henry, an American serving as a Lieutenant in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. The title is taken from a poem by a 16th-century English dramatist George Peele.

3. 国内外研究现状
In western countries, literati focused a lot on the environment outside when it comes to A Farewell to Arms. Brad Deffense discussed the conditions of the arms industry in an article. It states that the global military spending on weapon research and technology has declined, as manifested by the decrease of private arms companies and the privatization of government-owned arms companies. It also notes the globalization of the arms industry in which nations export and import weapons and technologies from each other, or collaborate on developing one, amidst extensive campaigns of anti-arms groups. Miyanish Takeuchi focused on the inception and reception of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, including foundation of the novel upon Hemingway's wartime and personal experiences; realistic aspects of life depicted in the novel; criticism of the novel by some readers for its frankness; characterization of the protagonist Catherine Barkley; juxtaposition of the themes of love and war.
To Chinese literati, humanity is the most precious fact reflected in A Farewell to Arms. In 2010, Chen Zhonglang claimed that Hemingway is a man with romance, freedom and sensibility. Although his story was based on the smoky battlefield, there was a heroine who stood by the hero and supported him mentally. The hope carried the hero through the hard times, and also supported all of the readers.
Han Xing made a conclusion that it#8217;s a world full of evil, sin and violence in his report. There#8217;s an end to everyone#8217;s life. To survive in such a world, people must set up a rule to keep going forward. You can die, you can lose, but you can#8217;t give up. Under the action of alien force, humans lose themselvesand humanity. Freedom spirit and personality lost, the man became a non-human and his personality tends to be divided.
