1. 研究目的与意义

Byron#8217;s long narrative poem Don Juan enjoys a special position in the literary world in the 19th century. It is also Byron#8217;s most popular poem. Don Juan is the forth immortal figure in the western history of literature after Quixote, Hamlet and Faust. Its success is not only owing to Byron#8217;s talent in writing poems, but also thanks to Byron#8217;s magnetic personality. The story of Don Juan started from the legend in western Europe. In the legend, Don Juan was a criminal, evil, unrestrained noble; he seduced the daughter of commander of Seville. When the commander found him to query him, he killed the commander. Then commander#8217;s ghost came to revenge, and at last the ghost pulled Don Juan into the hell. In the 17th century, Spanish author Gabriel wrote a drama based on the Don Juan legend. After that, Don Juan#8217;s story roused many people#8217;s interest. For example, it appears in Moliere#8217;s drama, Mozart#8217;s opera, Corneille#8217;s poem and Hoffman#8217;s work. Balzac created Long Life Water based on this story. Dumas wrote Fallen Angel which is similar to the Don Juan story. Shavian also wrote it into his drama. However, Byron#8217;s Don Juan was the most popular one and is still loved by many people nowadays. In this long poem, Don Juan is no more a libertine noble but a kind, infirm, sometimes strong sometimes weak young man. The characterization makes Don Juan a real person who can be easily accepted by readers. Don Juan#8217;s story had been enriched through the history and Byron#8217;s Don Juan was said to be an adaption of this story. But actually Byron#8217;s Don Juan shows us a totally different Don Juan who has similar personalities and even life experiences as Byron.

It#8217;s common that authors put their emotions as well as their experiences into their works. In Don Juan, Byron put his opinions about love, revolution and life into the main character. If the readers analyze Don Juan#8217;s actions on the basis of their own experiences and imagination, they may misunderstand some actions of Don Juan. They may even dislike Don Juan so much so that they would stop reading it. Therefore, when reading the book, readers should analyze Byron#8217;s self-expression firstly. An analysis of Byron#8217;s self-expression will enable readers to deeply understand of Don Juan#8217;s opinion on love and ethics and his revolutionary spirit, thus thoroughly grasping Byron#8217;s works.
